DirecTV has pulled a popular advertising campaign featuring actor Rob Lowe after cable company Comcast complained that many of the ads claims could not be supported by evidence.
The ads feature two versions of Lowe the cool DirecTV subscriber Rob Lowe, and the Super Creepy cable subscriber Rob Lowe. Various iterations of the ads substitute Super Creepy for other derogatory versions of the character, like Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe, or Broken-Down Less Attractive Rob Lowe.
Cable company Comcast made several complaints about the ad campaign to the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Better Business Bureau, which hears claims about untruthful or unsupported messages in advertising, according to the Los Angeles Times. This week, the NAD agreed with Comcast that many of the claims made in the ads, including that satellite TV offers better picture and sound quality and shorter wait times for customer service, could not be backed up by the satellite company. The agency also took issue with Lowes signature line, delivered at the end of each individual ad: Dont be like this me. Get rid of cable and upgrade to DirecTV. According to the Times, the NAD said the line conveyed a comparative and unsupported superiority message.
DirecTV has since started a new ad campaign featuring Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hannah Davis. But the company said it would appeal the NADs decision.
The company has reportedly not ruled out working with Lowe on a series of similar spots in the future.
According to the report, the campaign was highly effective; DirecTV signed up 149,000 customers in the fourth quarter of 2014 after having lost 28,000 subscribers in its previous quarter.

He’s got good bone structure :)
I normally don’t pay attention to commercials. But I find the Rob Lowe/Direct TV ads very funny and entertaining. I don’t know if they’re accurate though.
Rather odd that Comcast complained about Lowe’s “exaggerations” in the ads; after all, Comcast allowed Brian Williams to “lie on demand” for years.
Translation: These ads are really effective, and we want them off the air.
Loved these. So sad our freakin’ hypersensitive society is offended by everything.
The one where he wears the green shirt and the baseball cap looks like a spitting image of my brother.
Yea, they are funny . . . but creepy.
and if anyone is going to go after commercials that are creepy and factually unsupportable . . . how about GEICO?
15 minutes DOES NOT save you money. but hey, they are the Gubmint Employees Insurance Company . . . therefore liberal.
I have cable. I saw the Rob Lowe commercial about not being able to “start over” a show literally while I was watching a show that I had started over.
I like the Flo ads where they are about to burn her at the stake.
Child Porn criminal Rob Lowe
Yes, making child porn with an underage girl is so adorable.

2. Rob Lowe Has a Sex Tape With a Minor
Rob Lowe, teen heartthrob turned adult heartthrob, was going through a notable time in 1988. A videotape of him having sex with two women was recorded the night before the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. When the tape leaked it was discovered that one of the two young ladies was 16 years old. Rob was taken to court and agreed to 20 hours of community service in order to avoid criminal charges.
He called the incident the greatest thing that ever happened to me on The Oprah Winfrey Show, crediting it as the reason why he eventually got sober. Im not entirely sure that the underage girl or her family would agree.
Jeeeezz! Hey Comcast! Grow Up! Get A Life!
I, for one, am glad these commercials are off the air. “Meat Head Rob Lowe” almost turned me gay. Bro!
he is a criminal who never did time for making porn with a minor.
When would he have become a Republican?
Don't you mean Farmers'?
He was great in the Spiderman movies.
Farmers not State Farm
