Germany plans to bring 100 mothballed tanks back into service in what is widely seen as a response to rising tensions with Russia over Ukraine.
The tanks were sold to industry as part of defence cuts after the Cold War.
The German defence ministry said it would spend 22m (£16m;$24m) on bringing its total of tanks to 328.
Nato officials agreed in February to create a quick-reaction force to meet the challenges posed by the Ukraine crisis and by Islamic extremists.

In his book about the fall of Berlin, Cornelius Ryan mentioned that the Russians lost something like 400 tanks in just a couple of hours at Seelow Heights.
It hardly even slowed them down.
Of course the cost per tank back then must have been a tiny fraction of what it is now even adjusted for inflation.
I remember Curtis Aircraft was awarded a contract to produce P-40 fighters for $35,000 each.
Any.
Does German have the support systems to deliver, say, 100 of these vehicles at the same time to a combat zone, without compromising other parts of the army?
but even at $35,000 adjusted for inflation is still going to be a million or two a pop, for a WW2 prop plane.
“The whole German Army only has (after this addition) 328 tanks? What?”
They’re Germans.
Germany and NATO can deliver these 4 at a time in aircraft, and two at a time with helicopters.
“The Wiesel can easily be flown in by transport helicopters, a single CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter can fly in two at once, and common transport planes can carry four or more Wiesel vehicles.”
Europe flipped to Peaceniks after WWII with less guns, more butter. But it was actually OUR guns that kept the Cossacks out. Well, you probably already knew that.
Now they’re going to have to do it on their own.
Korea was pretty much the opposite. Many of my Korean co-working soldiers were from the upper strata of society, something you almost never see in our military any more.
American Tanks Return to Europe After Brief Leave

On Friday, the last of 29 M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams tanks were offloaded at the railhead at the Grafenwöhr training facilities. These heavily armored vehicles are upgraded versions of the older Abrams that left 10 months ago and will become part of what the Joint Multinational Training Command at Grafenwöhr is calling the European Activity Set.
...The EAS is a pre-positioned, battalion-plus-size equipment set with headquarters pieces and command-and-control elements, said Col. Thomas Matsel, operations officer with the JMTC.
...Several units are already scheduled to use the EAS. The 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, is first and will take temporary ownership of the vehicles, which will accompany them as they take part in three major exercises spanning from France to Latvia later this year.(2014)
This is not being overlooked by Putin. He will make a major military move within the next year IMO. His best chance of encountering minimum resistance is while Obama is president. He knows Obama will not respond or retaliate to any provocation, no matter how serious.
Just like in sports, you exploit your opponent’s weakness. That’s what will do in a big way.
There is a lot going on all over Europe, to prepare for Russia.
Actually right under half a million. Not bad compared to unit prices today... Still, today’s aircraft are a little bit better... :-)
It’s worse than that. Egypt builds their own version of the M1A1.
Germany, and most of the rest of NATO (Poland excluded) do not deserve the protection the treaty provides them.
USA should notify all: Hit the Treaty Commitment of 2% of GDP, or in 10 years you're out. And the USA cancels it's obligation to you.
Seems everyone’s finished reloading...

Try it out. Depending on the year of production it is only $500K in today’s dollars.
Might look at in terms of gold,
Leopard 2A6 is simply the best MBT there is.
Maybe $1.2 mil if adjusted by gold inflation.
The US depended on cheap mass production to just wear out the enemies logistics. Maybe a lesson learned from Grant? We should think about that when mocking cheap fighters, attack copters, and ships.
How much are our fighters worth in terms of numerical superiority? 5 to 1? Our military spend is 70% tax payer ripoff.
yes, a bit better
Or, more likely, they won’t need an airlift to the battlefield
