Sipsey Street Irregulars can now confirm the broad outlines of a story first disclosed two days ago, colleague Mike Vanderboegh reported Sunday from the NRA Annual Meeting in Nashville. Last week, a secret deal involving the National Rifle Association lobbying arm and brokered by politicians of both national political parties was struck in Washington DC that would save the ATF from the political and legal consequences of its own regulatory errors.
In the process, this deal would broaden the language of the 1968 Gun Control Act regarding sporting purposes and allow ATF to extract itself from the potentially catastrophic political damage of enforcing its arbitrary ruling that makes every owner of a pistol grip 12 Gauge shotgun like the Mossberg Cruiser a felon in possession of a destructive device subject to the penalties of the National Firearms Act of 1934 -- currently up to 10 years in federal prison and a quarter million dollar fine, Vanderboegh elaborated.
The crisis for ATF has been precipitated by its own actions, which are at risk of receiving unwelcome judicial scrutiny, sources told Vanderboegh. At some point, unless the Congress gives them the cover by changing the law, they are going to have to explain that in open court, he was told.
The deal to provide that cover has three components. The first, broadening sporting purposes language, will ensure owners of pistol grip shotgun-like firearms dont get caught up in a net of ATFs making, Vanderboegh reports. The second part will credit NRA for arranging that, and the third will involve a concession -- an ammunition import ban on "specialty ammunition," to include tracers, Vanderboegh continues, albeit noting the main objective is knocking a bigger hole in the Constitution by (widening the 'sporting purposes' language)..."

I find this personally offensive, that a gun owners rights group, of which i am not a member, (due to all those wrongfully endorsed candidates in my state), is going to make a deal with the Communist leadership of this country, on my behalf????
Doesn’t sound like ‘freedom’ to me!
“3. In return for allowing NRA to claim the credit, the Democrats demanded another ammunition import ban on “specialty ammunition,” to include tracers. Some sources agreed that this last “gimme” was a “throwaway,” in the words of one. “Look, their M.O. is to always demand more than they know they can get in to get the thing they really value. They’d like to get it but what they really covet is knocking a bigger hole in the Constitution by (widening the ‘sporting purposes’ language) . . . this deal will give them one big enough to drive Diane Feinstein’s limousine through.”
This reporter could get no one from NRA national leadership to go on or off the record to confirm this deal, but other sources familiar with the internal fallout of these revelations say that David Codrea’s original story was “spot on,” adding “they can’t believe they were found out.” Other sources in the nation’s capitol indicate that the deal was intended to be kept secret until it could be attached as a innocuous rider at the last moment to a “must-pass” appropriations bill. Said one: “The plan was to pass it, claim victory on all sides, and pray that no one noticed the ‘sporting purposes tweak.’”
He added: “What they’re really frightened about is how you guys found out about this so soon. That’s got them rattled.” Added another, “they’re looking for your sources and looking at each other and wondering who the snitch is.” There is much behind-the-scenes speculation here as to how members of the NRA will react, what answers they will demand, and how these revelations will play into the Wayne LaPierre-Chris Cox rivalry for power. It is no secret to the insiders I talked to that there is little love lost between the two and much mutual suspicion of motives. Said one: “The key thing is, was this Cox’s baby alone or did he get Wayne’s signoff?” And, he added, “who’s going to be manuevered into taking the blame for it?” Other sources tell this reporter that some very hard questions are going to be asked of Cox and LaPierre by board members in the coming days.
If so, that will be more reaction than that shown by the so-called “mainstream gun rights press” in evidence in the NRA pressroom. Since David Codrea’s story broke two days ago, they have been, as near as this reporter could tell, studiously, deliberately incurious about the implications of these revelations. Copies of David’s story have been distributed to them since it broke and most seem to have ignored it and few asked me any questions about it.
What reaction NRA leadership had to Codrea’s original story could only be gleaned by second-hand sources, but one said that “what they’re telling anybody who asks is that you’re both crazy sonsabitches who are making this up. . . You two are not their favorite people right now.” I asked another source, “Are they mad because the story is right, or mad because it’s wrong.” “They’re mad,” he said with a grin, “because it’s right.”
So, in the midst of non-denial denials and ad hominem attacks, we will continue to try to drill down to the truth as we can, this last day of the NRA national meeting of 2015.

If the deal will help the Liberal Democrats, the NRA will help you.
No more fake Conservatives for Obama NRA.
TWB
I want to join a local pistol and rifle club , but ,in order to join, they require me to join NRA
In the past ,NRA has financially contributed to "Dingey" Harry Reid - who shares none of my 'core' character or spiritual values.
As a result, I cannot join this club without making a contribution to NRA, and joining NRA (according to the club bylaws).
Behind closed doors , an agreement with ATF, NRA, and elected political representatives, agreed to enjoin the term sporting purposes.

Nice 100 Heads Life Insurance tee shirts to help Mike
One thing not mentioned with the NYS "SAFE ACT"
is the fact that CUOMO's SAFE ACT original language
stated " CONFISCATION" , without remunification to owners
and the Demo-Commies, and RINO's in the NY State Senate just completely funded the SAFE ACT
in the last budget vote ,without reading the legislation !
There will be repercussions and backlash !
Will this be some hair-brained scheme hidden as a rider buried in the middle of routine and completely unassociated legislation? What happens when someone like Sen. Cruz find it?
Why would any person or entity “negotiate” our rights as set forth in the U.S. Constitution and our Bill of Rights?! These are NON-negotiable. My goodness. Our ancestors sacrificed and died for our FREEDOM. And some money-grubbing, power-mongering organization/politician is going to usurp this from us? Enough is enough already.
In my collection.....
If you demonstrate an inability to keep or bear weapons safely, the rest of us have the right to use our weapons to disarm you for our safety. If you walk down the street pointing as handgun at random passers by, don’t be surprised if someone disarms you. If you store a nuclear weapon in your basement, don’t be surprised if the million people in the blast radius and fallout zone disarm you.
Everyone in Government and the NRA is trying to back pedal and deny that this has been going on. However, there is a lot of stuff coming to light that suggests otherwise.
I propose a solution to this whole situation that will allow everyone to save face. Considering that our elected officials aren’t likely to do it, we’ll take care of it for everyone.
I think it’s time we take out Sporting Purpose. We know how we’re going to get standing and we know how to make the case air tight. I think it’s time to cut the ATF off at the knees.
Why not the NRA.
Heller Foundation hasn’t... and won’t be.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives classification of pistol grip only firearms with 14 barrels that fire shotgun shells and are over 26 in overall length as neither shotguns nor National Firearms Act Destructive Devices or Any Other Weapons has created a situation wherein the agency must either quietly save face or have it exposed that untold numbers of good faith gun owners currently legally possess firearms problematic for the government to allow. In order for that status quo to continue, ATF, in conjunction with certain members of Congress and lobbying interests, is working at tweaking its definition of the arbitrary sporting use term, insider sources tell Gun Rights Examiner. And with that will come a push to expand definitions to allow for further importation bans on certain types of presently legal ammunition.
Well, frankly, I never knew there was a 'hole' in the NFA requirement that shotguns have 18.5 inch barrels or larger.
Now, I have no proof of this yet, but it appears this issue is about the 14" barreled shotguns.
Leaving aside the problem I have with limiting shotgun barrel length AT ALL, I find that the lack of this mention in most articles (that it pertains to 14" barreled shotguns) makes this close -- if not actual -- Fear Porn.
Most people reading these articles will assume that the regulation will apply to their 19" barreled, pistol gripped shotgun.
I need to perform further research, but at first blush, this doesn't look like an overreach under NFA.
Not liking the specialty-ammo import ban, but domestic production will still go on.
On a scale of 1-10 on gun-rights threats, it's looking like a 3.
Will confirm.
Note: One thing it MIGHT jeopardize, is a 12-gge Taurus Judge handgun. Not sure such an animal exists, but this reg change would preclude it.
Nor would I want to fire it!
What happened is that they made several rulings that factory pistol grip shotguns could have a barrel shorter than 18 inches as long as the over all length exceeded 26 inches. The first of these rulings came out I believe in 2013 or early 2014. Can’t remember right off.
However, ATF messed up and created a situation that flies in the face of the NFA and GCA. In a nutshell, combine this with the Hollis case and the NFA is pretty much done. I expect it to be overturned in the courts in the next 10 years or sooner.
What’s funny is that ATF keeps doing stuff to try to keep the NFA on life support only to see it slip further into extinction. They’re not the brightest people around.
