Nice landing spot, though.

Look at the beach. The tide will be coming back in within a few hours.

It looks like main gear box oil is coating the side of the helicopter. Perhaps there was an issue related to the oil cooler. Main gear box failure is obviously catastrophic.

Other landing options probably included open water or residential rooftops on the other side of the sand, or maybe one of the steep hillsides.

Thirty feet forward and they would have been fine, albeit there would have been a lot more blowing sand.
