Video may have killed the radio star, but in Norway it's digital that's killing FM radio for good.
In two years' time, the Scandinavian nation is slated to become the first in the world to phase out radio entirely.

This is the second version of the story I’ve seen, and both of them were written by people who seemed to think all the radio stations in Norway were going off the air. This one, at least, got around to mentioning digital. I thought it was weird that reporters who recently went through the analog/digital conversion in the US had difficulty comprehending what’s happening in Norway.
The government, by the way, attached a number of conditions to the 2017 date, including coverage area and availability of converters for car radios. In the UK, meanwhile, DAB is going backwards in usage, probably partially because they already have an extensive selection of stations, and FM coverage is really good, so there hasn’t been much reason for consumers to go to DAB.
While HD radio in the US runs on the same frequencies current broadcasters use, DAB operates on a different band. Part of the conversion in Norway will involve installing lots of converters in older cars.
A radio station can broadcast commercials that they produce, and that they hold the full broadcast rights to. Commercials sold by national conglomerates are not allowed to be broadcast over the web - very hard to get listener numbers that translate into sales revenue.
No different than listening to Rush online.
