This is upsetting just to read.

Yes, it is. These people probably never imagined anything like this happening to them in their wildest dreams. They were normal, law-abiding citizens, people who go to work, pay their taxes, and abide by the law. Not people who live their lives on the criminal fringes, in any way. People just like you and me.
It made my friend, who was a retiring sort, a frightened broken man. And he is a good man, too. I beg him to move away, marry his long term girlfriend and start over.
