When I finally read the Third Amendment to Ireland’s constitution, I was disgusted to learn that de Valera sold out Ireland, undoing all his advertised efforts to make Ireland independent of one empire only to yoke them even tighter to another one. All of the anti-English rhetoric I had been fed for most of my life came into question instantly, and a lot of it just dissipated into thin air.

The State may become a member of the European Coal and Steel Community (established by Treaty signed at Paris on the 18th day of April, 1951), the European Economic Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25^th day of March, 1957) and the European Atomic Energy Community (established by Treaty signed at Rome on the 25^th day of March, 1957). No provision of this Constitution invalidates laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the State necessitated by the obligations of membership of the Communities or prevents laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the Communities, or institutions thereof, from having the force of law in the State.

For a number of centuries, the Irish had legislative power in Westminster, and could even have had the home rule they claimed for a long time they were seeking by an act of that parliament. Ireland’s 1948 independence lasted a mere 24 years and they sold it to the EU for a bowl of pottage. Ireland nowadays is virulently anti-Zionist (hence antisemitic), which they were not when I was living there.
