People are desensitized by movies.
In addition to college, I worked there both as a professional and as a delivery truck driver; I have family / ancestors there... and all over north Jersey. My dad moved out as a kid just before WWII.
Of course, it also has “fancy” sections where the local leaders/etc., live, which has been the same since the 1800s.
I had a clip of an 1800s news article where a gentlemen fended off a would-be attacker with his pistol; no arrest, no front page news about guns, etc., just a little blip story noting that it happened.
Sounds like a great place to put a Starbucks.

Yes. And it’s not just Obama; the left has had this brewing since the 1970s. It made them most uneasy when the races started getting along too well.
You are so right about “contempt stirred up against law enforcement in the late 1960s”. And look how well it has worked. Just about every day, here on FR, there is a contingent that trashes policemen.
When I go back, which is rare, I am kinda amazed at that which was very normal to me at one time.
I know from experience though, you kinda just stop "seeing" certain things after a while.
First time I ever vacationed in the "emerging world". I was kinda set back by the shanty towns and huts right outside the gated "compound" where we'd be renting. People living under highways, mass dogs everywhere, typical third world stuff.
Then it was even weirder to me, after a week or so, I just wasn't "seeing" it anymore.
I have since learned whenever I go anywhere like that, in a few days, I won't "see" it. And it never fails.
