I don’t know what the law says on this (and it probably varies from State to State), but if they hand out licenses for private investigators one would think hiring them would be legal - and that just asking questions at a restaurant should be legal. If the sheriff had good reason to suspect that the judge was targeting him to stop his reelection, that in and of itself would seem to be an abuse of power, and the sheriff would seem to have the right to try to protect himself from abuse of power. That said, I have no idea about the legality of all this.

What I do know is that this doesn’t seem anymore like a country that resembles the USA, but maybe I was just naive all my life.
