And when all is said in done, $3billion is about what one F-35 will cost.
No, the Seawolf and Connecticut are still very much in service.
Altho they’ve been “dissappeared” to the ultra high security Trident SSBN base in Washington. Which is where the Carter (and previous special missions boat Parche) operates from. This was, ostensibly, to help with logistics by basing all three class members at the same location. But it also puts all three in the Pacific and pointed straight at China.
So how deep is that?
Astonishingly and superlatively deep.

think they sold advanced milling equipment, that allowed Russians to produce the complicated prop screws used by subs today. until then Russians had no idea just how noisy their subs were. between the Japanese and the Walker spy family, I heard we could have lost a naval war with the russians back then.
Interesting info - thanks.
With a crew of 52 it can stay under water for 444 days.
Naming ANY boat after him is HORRIBLY INAPPROPRIATE.
The building of Kings Bay happened ONLY because Carter insisted it be in Georgia. It is a terrible location for a sub base, and our East coast boomers continue to pay a steep price for it.
Really? Would you mind elaborating on that more?
I thought Kings Bay was built there so that any Soviet SSBN trying to either trail a boomer putting to sea or returning from patrol, or get into the patrol boxes (and I want to point out that I don’t know their location) would have to transit down the US East Coast and past a whole bunch of Navy bases and airfields loaded with ASW assets, plus over a bunch of SOSUS hydrophone farms.
Sorry, Soviet SSN, not SSBN.
I feel bad for the guys who had to serve on the “Jimmy Carter.” Gah!
Change the name!!
Just reading the article made me sick to think this was named after a traitor who sides with our enemies.
Port Canaveral FL, conversely, enables the boats to dive within five miles of the jetty.
When boats are on the surface, they are pretty helpless, thus the sooner you can dive the better. Kings Bay is just about the worst possible East Coast boomer port location possible.
My son spent 14 years on boomers, and has worked for Dept of Navy at Kings Bay refit facility since then. He primarily works on weapons systems.
I have been on two dependent's cruises, very interesting, but that 5 hour surface transit was horrible...subs are not very seaworthy.
Apropos name for the sub as they are traditionally named after fish.
Ouch! That left a mark.
We used to use something like that to lay out a gillenet at night from under a dock. Would make a hell of a purse seiner.
