So where’s the ash and cinder buildup from a previous eruption? Where’s the cone?
The "Lava Creek eruption," 640,000 yrs ago, sent ash all the way to Texas.
It blew up! Seriously. It’s not like the ones in Hawaii. Those cinder cones develop over time from small eruptions and spewing of ash and magma.
Whenever we drive through Yellowstone I stop on the west rim of the ancient crater (caldera) and explain it to the kids - you can’t see the other side of the crater. The park is inside of the crater.
The ash from the last time was tens of feet thick and extended to Kansas and beyond. When it happens again, it would probably end humanity I’m guessing. Well, at least civilized humanity. No crops throughout the world for a few years would do that.
