It said the quake hit at 11.56am local time.....because it was a shallow quake it was about 16 times more powerful than the 7.0 quake that devastated Haiti in 2010.
The things that could make this tragedy much worse are that the epicenter was relatively shallow (only 15 km below the surface) and its close proximity to the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu. The possibility of thousands dead cannot be discounted.
