VW named one of their vehicles Toureg. The Toureg were an ancient tribe who had slaves. The Left demanded the name be changed and an apology. The president of VW said something along the lines of, “They can kiss my @$$” but in German, of course. That was the end of it. I think that should be the standard answer, in whatever language is appropriate.

Tue Tuareg (Touareg) are not an ancient tribe: they are a substantial present-day subset of the Berbers in central-Saharan and South-Saharan Africa. And they still have slaves (although that's technically illegal.)

I don't know anything about the VW controversy, but I suspect it wasn't because of moral opporbrium of Tuaregs as a slave-trading society, but shaking a finger at the Germans for "cultural appropriation." VW says they called their vehicle Touareg because it's a tough off-road car and the Touaregs are tough off-road people.
