Why the 'safe space' movement is a liberal assault on freedom
The Week ^ | April 23, 2015 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

One of the more contentious ideas to recently emerge from the culture war is that of "safe spaces." We are said to be at risk of social dangers. Sometimes these dangers are labeled denialism (in which someone's identity isn't recognized) or triggering speech (speech that sets off traumatic responses in unwitting listeners). The way some students at elite colleges combat these social dangers is to create, or demand the creation of, safe spaces. And just as often, students demand that their entire campus become a safe space.

Hence the wrong kind of speech is re-labeled as violence. The space only becomes safe when certain ideas (and the people expositing them) are banished. We're trying to build a supportive community, don't you know?

Why worry about the exotic (and sometimes silly) life of a college campus? Well, it matters because future elites — who will set the norms and tone of our institutions of power — are coming of age in this intellectual stew. At top colleges we already see the nepotistic acceptance of incurious mediocrity, the shirking of citizenship's duties, and a liberation from old constraints, all of which tell us about the future of our nation's social and political life.

What a country-where the same group demands “safe space” from speech but doesn’t care if we have safe blood.

A dollar to a donut says these special little snotflakes are being told what they don’t want to see, being told what they don’t want to hear, being told what they don’t want to read, and told they don’t want anything on their campus that is not approved by liberal government and liberal academia or disagrees with the official teachings. Just speculating...’cause we all know snowflakes aren’t very smart.

A very underrated movie.....

That’s right. You see, according to *Cacteau’s* plan. *I’m* the enemy. Because I like to think, I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech, freedom of choice. I’m the kind if guy who would sit in the greasy spoon and think “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the big rack of Barbecued spare ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I *want* high cholesterol. I want to eat bacon, butter and buckets of cheese alright? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinatti in a non-smoking section. I wanna run around naked with green jell-o all over my body reading a Playboy magazine. Why? Because maybe I feel the need to okay pal? I’ve *seen* the future, you know what it is. It’s made by a 47 year-old virgin in gray pajamas soaking in a bubble bath, drinking a broccoli milkshake and thinking “I’m an Oscar-Meyer Wiener”. You wanna live on top, you gotta live Cacteau’s way. What he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Your other option: come down here, maybe starve to death.

Poor little liberals are so fragile they need a “safe space” in case there’s any “microagression” in the area.

How are they going to cope in the real world when their boss tells them to “Finish that report this afternoon or you’re fired!”?

Reminds me of after Ferguson and the choke incident in NYC. Remember students at Harvard et al were so 'traumatized' they asked for more time for final exams or something along that line?

I left out the kicker was it was law school students.

Try to visualize a sensitive lawyer asking a judge for a recess because of 'trigger words.'

I remember the line in that movie about abortion being illegal, but so is pregnancy without a permit.

yet they have no qualms about calling for the death of “climate deniers,” forcing people to act against their conscience when gay marriage is involved, refusing to seat a jew on the student council or denigrating Caucasians with the accusation of “white privilege.” There is no room for this “safe space” nonsense in America. Ideas need to stand on their own legs in a competitive arena.

How are they going to cope in the real world...

Sinple.

If a few years, the "real world" is going to be their world. And they are going to change the real world into their bizarre fantasy world.

It's already happening.

It's going to make the Harrison Bergeron story look like totalitarian underachievement.

The left is not going to voluntarily state: ‘O’ Fie we are wrong and will mend our ways. We promise not to attack any normal American.’ Ordinary political means are useless with the left as they mean to destroy us.

I can’t remember where I read it, but it was a feminist concerned that there aren’t enough law students getting a good grounding in sexual assault and domestic violence law. The professors can’t talk about what is or isn’t rape to train lawyers the fine ethical line in these subjects, what is or isn’t consent, what facts you can believe when everyone is drunk. Because anything related to the topic can be a “trigger”, you just can’t talk about it.

And practicing grilling a pretend rape victim violates the narrative that women should be presumed the victim and men are always to blame, so you get challenged for even pretend rape trials asking, “But you were dating him, so why wasn’t that night consent when you’re equally drunk? If you went out the next week, why should we believe it is actually rape? You only changed the story after your parents found out about the relationship”.

You lose any quality lawyers to handle sexual assault and domestic violence cases when they come in screaming that the evil man must be to blame, the woman cannot be guilty, and the logical evidence shows reasonable doubt.

[[Hence the wrong kind of speech is re-labeled as violence.]]

I thought the courts already weighed in on what hate speech is already? How are these campuses getting away with REDEFINING what hate speech is?
