In a first for a major restaurant chain, Chipotle Mexican Grill on Monday will begin serving only food that is free of genetically engineered ingredients.
This is another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food, said Steve Ells, founder and co-chief executive of Chipotle. Just because food is served fast doesnt mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients, highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors.
In 2013, Chipotle was the first restaurant chain to indicate which items contained genetically modified organisms, and a small but growing number of restaurants, largely in fine dining, also now label their menus.
Grocers, too, are moving to offer consumers more products free of genetically altered ingredients. The shelves and cases in Whole Foods stores are to be free of products containing such ingredients by 2018, and Walmart is vastly expanding its selection of organic foods, which are free of genetic alteration by law.
Even big food companies are moving to take genetically modified ingredients, or G.M.O.s, out of their products or to label products so that consumers know which are free of them.
Whether other major restaurant chains will follow Chipotles lead is uncertain. The increased demand for such products has made them more expensive and difficult to obtain in the amounts that big businesses need.

Uh, as of a year or two ago, there was no GMO wheat commercially available. Has that changed?
Think big agra and big government...$$$
I grew up on a farm. I am pro-agriculture. That being said, enhancements and processing to our food supply has depleted many of the nutrients these foods once had, especially wheat.
[And wild cattle did not produce 10 gallons of milk a day.]
Milk isn’t the same milk is was either. Why is it so many people who grew up drinking milk are now lactose intolerant?
How did we feed Africa before 1994 (GMOs)
Not all corn is from GMO seed...
Almost none of the kinds of corn, such as corn-on-the-cob, that people prefer to eat directly is GMO. Non-GMO corn flour for tortillas is readily available. More GMO corn for human consumption is hitting the market, however.
Their plight is due to corruption and instability of government...
As the Environmental Working Group puts it, Most of the investment in GE crops ends up feeding cows and cars, not people.
I have no problem with companies selling GMO food or consumers purchasing same if that is what they want.
But I would like to know what is in my food (and what my food is) and therefore want my food to be labeled in such a way that I know what I am ingesting.
And everyone wonders why food tastes better in Europe.
The result of nonGMOs, or the result of Gorebull warming scams keeping third world countries at that level?
The result of nonGMOs, or the result of money and food sent to help, but instead kept by evil ruler making him even more powerful, and therefore more difficult to overthrow by those he starves?
The result of nonGMOs, or the result of white farmers being run off and native tribes taking the land without any knowledge of farming and no desire to work?
The result of nonGMOs, or the result of a theocracy that wants to party like is 1399?
Next time you are shopping look at the contents of what you are buying, namely CORN STARCH, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, SOY...it’s in almost every product to add density and flavor.
Which is another reason for the explosion in the cases of obesity and diabetes...
Good but I don’t eat in places that pull ads from conservative media.
Oh yes! The government designed overproduction of commodity corn and soy leads to plenty of bad stuff. Calories used to be in short supply for the world population, so it is understandable how we got here. Economic freedom is critical to making sure non-GMO food is available.
It doesn't.
When I'm in Europe, I'm eating at restaurants and paying high European prices. In the U.S., I could attain the same quality point at much less cost. Or at the same price point, I would eat much better in the U.S.
A lot of American food consumption is driven by connvenience. This is a matter of consumer choice, not availablity of higher quality options. Casual food in Europe is as boring as casual food here, although a traveller might get some added spice for novelty value.
No need to insult those of us who are cautious...We may end up getting the last laugh.
And in the meantime, all those folks who ate there? Did they develop any food related problems? But now that Chipotle mentioned it, here come the law suits from people who all of a sudden have a problem.
> Mankind has been modifying FOOD for ions- it is called cross breeding. The trail an error approach to GMOs. Yet nobody ever complained....
It’s eons not ions (charged particles).
When they modified the tomato to make more scopolamine and hyoscyamine in order to kill white fly, they should have asked if it will harm humans. It doesn’t kill me to eat GMO tomatoes, but it does make me for several days.
