I have never been in a big city when the streets weren't torn up and the gas prices astronomically high.

In Kansas City I had to go 6 blocks, facing all points of the compass, to get two blocks from the freeway exit to the hotel. Then, I was chaperoning 18 high school students to the Skills USA Nationals. I wouldn't let them out after dark and in groups of less than 4 during the day. Downtown KC, what a hell hole.
