The University of Maryland, Baltimore and numerous downtown businesses closed early Monday, citing concerns about potentially violent activity in the area.
Lexington Market, a city courthouse and businesses including T. Rowe Price and Venable LLP said police warned them of large gatherings and protests downtown.
According to widely circulated flier, a high school "purge" was to take place at 3 p.m., starting at Mondawmin and ending downtown.
Such memes have been known to circulate regularly, but today's has led to bolstered police presence around the city.
The flier includes an image of protesters smashing the windshield of a police car this past weekend after a march spurred by the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who died earlier this month after being arrested by city police, turned violent and destructive.
A post on the University of Maryland Baltimore's website said that the closure was prompted by a recommendation from city police. The campus will also stop shuttle service.

There’s a good mystery writer with stories based in Baltimore. She refers to it as “Charm City,” but that’s the only place I’ve heard it.
I absolutely adore parts of Baltimore — it’s one of my favorite cities. That said, I have also never been more scared in my life (two times) than there. And, I grew up near Oakland and have traveled alone through many third world countries. Nothing came close to my two experiences in Baltimore.

I’ve become very skeptical about all such events. Who creates the violence and who pushes it? We in the public sphere are typically fed our points of view by intellectual elites with Harvard degrees. It doesn’t make them wrong, but it doesn’t make them honest or right either.
In my view those that played a part in the original killing and severing of the spinal cord need to have answers and need to be fully investigated. The expansion of these riots and who caused it is an unknown, unless Al Sharpton is now on site.
Anarchy is sometimes driven by an establishment that wants an end result that is beneficial only to them but anti-Constitutional to most Americans. There is a huge elitist constituency that wants all Americans afraid and disarmed. Think not? Think again. What better way to move this forward than to promote anarchy and martial law. Establishment provocateurs have a history of infiltrating peaceful demonstrations in an effort to turn them violent and give an excuse to get public support so as to bump heads.
I only wish I was not as cynical of the system, but I am. We will never know the truth. Search for provocateurs in peaceful demonstrations posing to change public opinion.

This was all predictable and preventable. The rioting and looting were announced in advance. The police and national guard should have been called out and deployed and put into action, arresting and stopping the criminals, by force. Instead, I saw small numbers of officers, standing around, even retreating. MASSIVE force could have stopped all of this.
Yea, I saw that...and then they run like the maggots they are. Looks like the Mayor has said they are and will be arresting these “thugs”, and will be going thru the photos they have and others to arrest these punks. Will be a fruitless endeavor if they don’t go further than a slap on the hands.

Yes exactly...they don’t care...these kids just want to rumble and cause chaos...they don’t care what reason is used...anything to congregate and loot.
Interesting that Baltimore has a standard curfew for their kids anyway.
