Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson denounced the "epidemic of murders in the country."
"We have become too violent, too full of hate," Jackson told reporters before the service. "We need training, employment, housing, access to health, a reconstruction project. Poverty is a weapon of mass destruction."
Tensions have been on the rise in Baltimore since Gray's death, which his family's lawyers say was caused when his spine was mostly severed following his arrest.
Six officers have been suspended with pay pending the outcome of a police investigation that is to be submitted to state prosecutors by Friday.
The US Justice Department, which was already looking into Baltimore's use of force, has also opened its own civil rights probe.
Police confirmed Gray requested medical help and an inhaler after he was detained and acknowledged that he should have received medical attention sooner.
They also revealed that Gray, contrary to policy, was not buckled into his seat in a police van, which made at least three unexplained stops on its way to the city's Western District station, now the scene of nightly protests.
Gray's arrest was caught on video by bystanders, and he can be heard howling in apparent pain as his limp body is dragged into the van.

I feel sorry for the cops.
But, like so many other people who abhor the needless and wanton shooting of dogs and innocent old people, I will stand on the sidelines and shrug my shoulders.
I see this as one pack of society-hating hoodlums attacking a well-paid, professional pack of hoodlums, with the property of the innocent middle-class caught up as collateral damage.
Wouldn’t it be nice if cops today could count as they once did on the SOLID support of ALL non-criminal civilians..?
Gosh, I WONDER how cops might change in order to re-capture that support, huh.
stop needlessly shooting dogs
stop needlessly manhandling old people
stop needlessly raiding the homes of terrified, law-abiding people
STOP these things and the very great bulk of law abiding people will support you, will give info to you, will be polite to you, wave to you.
PS - I don’t care about Trayvon and his many clones.
What has happened in Baltimore that it doesn’t well deserve for electing this traitor as their mayor?
“Give the protesters space”..........and enough time.... to scout out to make plans, to loot the stores of their choice.
Oh, and please, give the Rioters “Reasonable Time” before imposing a curfew on short notice....after all they have to have time to stock up on Liquor etc.... can’t get too aggressive here. We don’t want to offend the peaceful protesters here.
and the people who manage these places have abandoned them evidently.
where are the korean shop owners on the roofs.....ala the Rodney King Mess?
I liked the guy at the end of Megan’s show who admitted to getting hit with bean bags after he threw bottles at police. Was even nice enough to give his name when asked. I hope they check out the video and charge him accordingly.
Watching some idiot now drive what is very likely a stolen car through the fires in the street.
The police seem to be doing a good job of keeping up with things, but this is just the beginning of what will turn out to be a very very long night for Baltimore and it’s Police.
Rose and Milton.
Yeah - right. And if we got jobs for ISIS members they would quit beheading Christians.
Blacks are the only group have to sue people in order to live next door to them.
Governor Hogan ordered the guard activated what, two or three hours ago? Less than a minute after the mayor made the request. Do you have the slightest notion how much time it takes to muster several thousand guardsmen, issue gear and equipment, brief officers, arrange transport, and position units in their assigned locations, and be ready to roll? If the guard is in position to contribute to quelling this disturbance within twenty-four hours of Governor Hogan 's order the citizens of Baltimore will have been well served.
The cops are getting ready to stop 3 leaders and are waiting for a paddy wagon.
This nonsense gets worse with each passing hour, yet the dumbass mayor has not deployed the NG and her curfew will not be in effect tonight.
NO EXCUSE FOR THIS. It is sickening to see this occur without response. I don’t care about local sensibilities but there should be federalized guard on those streets ow. I have friends in Baltimore and even without this is so, so wrong.
They got one guy, may not need the wagon.
Another case of a politician trapping itself by indirectly calling calling the public stupid.
It's "let the crowd vent" night, held in honor of Mayor David N. Dinkins of New York City.
The Governor said he deployed,,the Guard? where ARE THEY..over in Jersey??
The fact that the many units of National Guard have recently been deployed in a war zone may have the politicians worried that they maybe over experienced and be liable to overreact. Just my observation..
Federal and Urban. 20 black males with masks and hoodies.
Stores offering 100% off sales in Baltimore. They are having a Pre-Fire Sale.
I don’t know. I do know it takes time to mobilize that many men.
