Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) took to the House floor Tuesday night to urge African-American mothers follow the example of a Baltimore woman who forced her son to leave the city's riots.
Video of Toya Graham slapping her son for participating in the Baltimore riots went viral. Rush, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, said mothers of African-American children should use their "awesome powers" to push back against violence.
"I would like to make a special appeal to African-American mothers across this country. That they begin to use their awesome powers to take back our streets from the daily violence that far too many of our youth, far too many of our families, and far too many of our communities are experiencing each and every day," Rush said.
Rush stood beside a photo taken from the video of Graham ordering her son to stay away from the dangerous riots. "Beside me today is an image that many across the nation have seen and it's the subject of conversation all across our country. The image of a strong black mother giving her son what I will call a low whooping — a low whooping — to snatch him back from the senseless violence that is currently plaguing the city of Baltimore, Maryland. As this picture demonstrates, mothers can and mothers must be the mobilizing force to take back our streets," Rush said.
Graham, the Baltimore mother, said she wanted to prevent her son from becoming another Freddie Gray.
"He gave me eye contact. And at that point, you know, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that,” Graham said in an interview with CBS News. "That's my only son, and at the end of the day I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray.”
The Illinois Democrat further blasted the violence in Baltimore and accused rioters of "pillaging" their own neighborhood.
"That makes no sense. That's eating the wrapper and throwing away the candy bar," Rush said.
How many of them have just one?
Generations and generations of people CANNOT consistently make wrong choices THEN expect a positive outcome.

"outcome" is somewhat subjective, and measured relative to the outcome of people who made better choices. They're trying to create an illusion of improving the outcome of bad decisions by artificially worsening the outcome of good ones.
Hey Mr.Rush, why not tell black males to stay with their ‘baby’s mommy’? I know it just isn’t blacks but whites and Latinos are doing the same. Time to strengthen marriage.
How about they require their children to behave and learn in school? And pull their pants up???
How about mothers turn off the television and read to their children?
HOW ABOUT MARRYING THEIR DADDY?????
I have worked closely with several black men (hired one of them) during my various ‘careers. They were in good jobs ... had good educations, including a college degree. They were polite and well spoken, and good workers ... also a lot of fun to be around. What did they have in common? A mother who raised them right ... and every single one of those guys was still VERY respectful of their moms, appreciative of her sacrifices to get them a good education & what they needed to have a better life, AND they all were still a little bit “afraid” of her! When momma spoke, these guys still listened, if not ‘jumped’. An intact family is still the best, but lacking that for whatever reason, if you have a motivated, morals/values (black or otherwise) mom who truly parents her kids, they can (and do) turn out well.
Why not fathers?
Not one of these fool politicians has the nerve to make the appeal that ought to be made: African-American FATHERS, marry the women you make babies with, and then raise the kids to be about something besides murder and mayhem.
Even black “leaders” refuse to call on black men to step up and be responsible fathers. Black fathers have been so marginalized that its no wonder to me why they just make babies and move on.
Don't forget that you will only see what the prosecutor wants you to see.

Only white evangelicals are targeted by CPS for disciplining their children.
I had a great idea, though, to make the idea of the article happen.
Pass laws that say that once a kid is arrested,
he can no longer be counted as a dependent for purposes
of welfare payments to the mother.

Yes, she did, and today, practically the whole nation is rising up to applaud her for doing that.

If the women held them to a higher standard -- i.e. job, responsibility, marriage -- men would behave better. That today's women let themselves be knocked up and abandoned is pathetic.
Some men, sure. Others will be responsible whether women insist on it or not. But I agree many will descend to whatever low level of sexual morality they can get away with.
I will be interested in seeing your comments on the experience, sans any info regarding a case :-)
I served on one and yes, you will be committed over the entire 120 days.
Personally I came away with the belief that every leftist in the nation should have to serve on one, it’s an eye opener.
