Court: 16 FBI staffers guarding Tsarnaev relatives

Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's five relatives are being guarded by 16 FBI staffers -- and the feds want them to testify this week so they can be sent back to Russia on Friday, according to court transcripts.

“It’s an enormous expense and distraction for the agency, and that’s just part of the expense that the government has endured,” federal prosecutor William Weinreb said during a closed-door meeting Monday with the defense and Judge George O’Toole, according to transcripts shown on the court's public terminal.

“The FBI is devoting 16 personnel full time to taking care of them, both guarding them as well as protecting them from the press and others,” Weinreb said, according to the transcript. “It’s currently the intention of the FBI to return the foreign witnesses to Russia on Friday, meaning that they need to testify this week. At that point they will have been in the country for a week.”

Tsarnaev's defense in the death penalty phase of his trial began this week. His relatives are expected to paint a portrait of a troubled family that included two mentally ill parents who left Dzhokhar under the sway of his jihadist older brother and co-conspirator Tamerlan.

The relatives were moved by the feds to an undisclosed location after their arrival in Boston sparked a media furor.

“I want the record to reflect that it is still our intention that they are all going back to Russia on Friday whether they have testified or not, and the defense can make their decision about whether they want to call them between now and then or not,’’ Weinreb said, according to the transcript.

Defense attorney William Fick said the defense hopes to put the relatives on the stand tomorrow but that preparing them for their testimony is "extremely difficult."

“The conditions under which their presence was permitted and the conditions under which we’re able to interact with them makes it extremely difficult to do the preparation work,” he said, according to the transcript.

“There’s a concern about whether we can be ready on Thursday, but we’re certainly making efforts to do so,” Fick said.

Fick said he expects all five to complete their testimony within a day.

O'Toole indicated he is inclined to agree with the feds that the family should testify this week.

“Well, let’s see how things develop, but I don’t think the government’s request is an unreasonable one as I heard it,” O’Toole said.

The FBI had no immediate comment this morning.

Couldn’t these guys have just said “death to America” over skype instead of us paying for them to come here and do it?

Seems like the more rational thing for our government to do is execute them all.

It’s a criminal enterprise...

Absolutely no reason for them to be here.

Defense attorney William Fick said the defense hopes to put the relatives on the stand tomorrow but that preparing them for their testimony is “extremely difficult.”

His biggest challenge in preparing them to testify is to get them to stop saying”Death to America.”

Why was Boston not likewise PROTECTED?

Why were the murderers not required to have PASSPORTS
even after they murdered 3 people, and there were
two warnings that the murders were coming?

Absolutely no reason for them to be here.

Sure there is. So they can apply for green cards and get on the administrative fast track to citizenship and EBT cards.

Would have been nice if the FBI had protected Americans so well before the bombing.

I guess they see their job as protected terrorists from Americans and not vice versa.

I am truly puzzled.
Has our "system" also paid for transportation food and lodging for all the relatives of the terrorists held at Guantanamo?
If not, why not?
What is different about the Tsarnaevs?

If the killer is a "citizen," he clearly and obviously obtained it through fraud and perjury.

How does that legal CF work, anyway? Who thought of it? Who authorized it?
