BALTIMORE A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray banging against the walls of the vehicle and believed that he was intentionally trying to injure himself, according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.

He was absolutely successful
perpulation
I was in a few paddy wagons in my teens for various drinking charges, I no longer drink btw, but there was no seat belts in them...that was a lot of years ago, apparently they do now?
I remember on 2 occasions about a dozen guys being loaded in from the jail to go to court ,and there was no seat belts
You’re asking good questions. I’d like to add a couple along similar lines. Are there pictures of the van interior available to look at? Supposing he actually slammed his head in a way that would cause loss of consciousness, is a limp unconscious body more susceptible to dead drop falls that could cause spinal injury? Other than the obvious, such as a kick or punch to the throat, what mechanism can cause a crush injury to the windpipe? Can that happen from the neck being bent at an acute angle? Think of a straw being bent until the tube collapses. Someone who is totally out cold who takes a very hard fall, slamming into the wall or the corner of one of those cages could have their neck bent pretty badly.
I’m not looking to simply rationalize a way to get the police off the hook. If someone did this deliberately, its awful. But, absent video or reliable eyewitness testimony we have to piece together what happened.
pot hole
Wouldn’t the van be padded on the interior?
Well, yeah. That’s the reason you shackle a prisoner is that they’re acting out violently. It appears that’s finally beginning to occur to the MSM’s “experts”.
He was not restrained by a seat belt. I read that the van was stopped so they could put leg irons on him. The seat belt restraint police guidelines went into effect just days before this incident, so technically the police did not follow the guidelines.
But you know how protocol changes go. It takes a while for everyone to read them, but if there are important changes to protocol, it’s incumbent on management to hammer those changes home to the rank and file.
You know.... the most likely.... most reasonable.... most plausible explanation is generally pretty close. Its a lot more likely they tried to choke him out because he was fighting, and for whatever reason it broke his neck. That’s a lot more plausible explanation for how a windpipe gets crushed.
What do you expect in a Rat-run city?
CNN article says that the M.E. is still waiting for the toxicology report, and a spinal expert’s analysis before issuing his final report.
This is at least partially because the police were known to take the arrested on “nickel rides”, where the cops would deliberately take sharp turns and go over bumpy roads. The idea was to shake up the arrested folks, teach them a lesson if you will.
Can’t you see that meeting in the captain’s office. 6 cops sit down. Captain’s yelling “what the &*&(*& happened?” “Gee... boss... we don’t know....we just put him in the back and turned a few sharp corners and that dumb thug was banging his head on the wall, and just broke his own neck..... oh yeah... he crushed his own windpipe too.”
But this never happened before /sarc
This “person close to officer” who was interviewed by Anderson Cooper appears to be a woman (based upon several stray “wisps” of hair that slipped out of the baseball cap. The voice was changed to sound like that of a man, but is likely a black woman IMHO. CNN did a good job of trying to hide her identity, but not enough to prevent her from being detected by those who know her well.
This prisoner will change his story after the DOJ have words with him

Nice neologism. A quick Google search reveals you to be the first person to use that “word”...so if it comes into widespread adoption, I’ll remember you as the creator. I regret that the “perpulation” within our Republic continues to rise.
I need to use that in a story I intend to sell
If the cops had crushed his larynx, he would have died very quickly.
He was in the hospital for a week before he died.
