An Assyrian bishop has confirmed that negotiations with ISIS have stalled after the group demanded $23 million (£15 million) in return for the release of 230 Christian hostages.
The hostages, Assyrian Christians from the north-east of the country, were kidnapped by the terrorist group in February. They are now awaiting a trial in an Islamic court under Sharia law.
According to A Demand for Action, the Assyrian rights campaigning groups, Bishop Mar Mellis spoke to SBS Radio in Australia about the negotiations between the Assyrian Church of the East and the Islamists.
The Assyrian hostages were taken from Hassake on February 25, and although some were released 84 women and 51 children are among those still held captive.

I say give them the desserter Bergdahl.
Paying ransoms is self-defeating. People will get themselves ransomed over and over again because they cannot run away. Better to launch an all-out war and if they die, they die martyrs, either way.
We’ll give you 5 Gitmos and 3.75 mil and no more.
And Barry’s hands appear to be clean according to mass media..
ISIS are the darlings of the White House..
Where’s the OUTRAGE..?..
How about they pay us 3 billion dollars to not nuke Mecca?
Give the Christians $23 million in weapons so they can defend themselves...
As awful as it is, you cannot negotiate with terrorists. To give them money may save those lives, but at what cost? Those lives saved will be funding the loss of other lives. Surely that is not the christian answer.
Sometimes the situation calls for the laying down of your own life for others. It is tragic, but it is necessary. This is one of those times. Try to save them by fighting and killing ISIS, but not by funding ISIS.
But the jokes on them this time. Obama doesn't care about Christians so no ransom.
How much does a cruise missile cost?
We cannot negotiate with them. But, at the same time, we should not allow them to live.
We need to pick a city where they live, and carpet bomb it. I appreciate the distaste for collateral damage. At some point we have to demonstrate strength and resolve.
We are not going to send in ground troop—which is the correct response. But my guess is that they do not have the anti-aircraft missiles to take out a BUFF.
As an old USAF veteran, I LOVE the BUFF!
$23M will buy a whole lot of 500 pound bombs and guidance packages for them. We should send these terrorists their $23M in explosives, delivered from altitude to where they will do the most good.
Start carpet bombing in 10 minutes!
