Freddie Gray's death ruled a homicide, police officers charged
Business Insider ^ | 05/01/2015

Prosecutors ruled that Freddie Gray's death was a homicide. Friday morning, State attorney Marilyn Mosby announced that all six officers involved in the incident have been charged and warrants are out for their arrests.

"Six officers are each facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment: Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White, Officer William Porter, Officer Garrett Miller, Officer Edward Nero and Officer Caesar Goodson," The Baltimore Sun reports. "Goodson, who drove the van, has been charged with second-degree murder."

Mosby described how police arrested Gray on no grounds, violated police procedures by cuffing his hands and legs the van without putting him in a seat belt, and repeatedly failed to provide him with medical attention.

On April 12, Gray was arrested for carrying a knife and his spine was somehow partially severed while in police custody.

Mosby said that the knife was legal and that the officers “failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”

Gray underwent major surgery, lapsed into a coma, and died on April 19.

“Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all" when he was removed from the wagon.

His death sparked protests across Baltimore that escalated into riots.

"We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses from me. Period," City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said. "We know our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times."

I am suspicious of the charges...not that there are not bad cops, certainly there is just like bad plumbers etc.

I wont be surprised if there is not more surprises. If for some reason something bad went down, well it took them a lot of tries, speaking of innocent Wilson and Zimmerman

I guess these guys might pay for all the bad things ever done to blacks since 1970

Why run for no reason? As it played out, seems like he had good reason. The knife the cops swore to was not a switch blade, but a legal knife. The cops lied about about probable cause. Watch the TV show COPS and you will see that cops hassle people they see on the streets that have been arrested before. Besides, why he ran is a moot point. He was arrested wrongly and mistreated while in custody.

Having all the cops quit and let everything go wild is a straw dog. What citizens want is honest cops who do not take their adrenaline out on who they falsely arrest.

Not all cops were arrested, just the ones who mistreated and falsely arrested someone. Should cops be able to arrest anyone they want? Or go against department policy with impunity? Of course not!

RE: He was arrested wrongly and mistreated while in custody.

As I said before, if you’ve done nothing wrong, you don’t need to run. If the cops arrest you wrongly, you can always SUE them. There are many lawyers who would be willing to take your case.

RE: Because this is America and you don’t need to present a reason to the police to run...yet.

So, you’re saying that because this is America, cops should NOT be chasing you when you run as they approach?

They should just let you go?

There is no “let you go” when they didn’t try to arrest him. He saw cops and ran. They didn’t call out to him to stop and then he ran. A citizen does not have an obligation to present himself to the police for permission to continue on his way.

It’s disgusting how some people on “Free” Republic are so in favor of a police state.

If they arrested him "wrongly" as you say, and he dies from mysterious injuries while in their custody, it is a criminal case, not civil.

No, it isn't illegal to make eye contact with a cop.

It isn't even illegal to run away from a cop - although foolish.

Gray asked for medical help. Because he was "just a criminal" he was ignored. He died as a result. These officers have, justly in my opinion, been charged.

Being a cop does not excuse inhumanity.

Yup. Bootlickers.

Cops have a tough job. So do many of us who pay their salaries. They should and must be held to a high standard of conduct.

I don't like the witch hunt aspect one iota. But if the other side wanted a "hands up, don't shoot!" meme, it would come from this case and most certainly not the Michael Brown/Darren Wilson one.

My hope is that we get this one right, and from the facts and from prior anecdotes out of Baltimore like the case a few years ago where the police arrested a tourist simply asking for help/directions, it looks pretty bad for this sorry group. This correction in this city has been a long time coming...

The sorry group is the prosecutor who received thousands from grays lawyer, the sorry group is the prosecutor who gave a political speech, the sorry group is the prosecutor who is married to the council man in that district.

the sorry group is the Mayor who refused an outside investigation and has made political statements.

This is such a farce and a massive stain on the city of Baltimore and the state of MD.

We need an independent investigation away from that city and no more political statements.

One article states that Gray ran because the police officers “made eye contact with him.” That might give some insight into what law enforcement’s new rules will be when dealing with blacks.

You ignore one thing -— this area is a KNOWN drug trade area.

RE: They didn’t call out to him to stop and then he ran.

You and I don’t know that. We still need to find out if there was a call to stop.

The knife laws of Maryland are confusing. "Penknives" are okay to carry concealed. It is not very clear, especially for Baltimore City.
(ii) “Weapon” does not include: 1. a handgun; or 2. a penknife without a switchblade. (c) Prohibited. — (1) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon of any kind concealed on or about the person. (2) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon, chemical mace, pepper mace, or a tear gas device openly with the intent or purpose of injuring an individual in an unlawful manner. (3) (i) This paragraph applies in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, Caroline County, Cecil County, Harford County, Kent County, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, St. Mary’s County, Talbot County, Washington County, and Worcester County.
