Yeah, this is pretty much an implicit admission that the decision to prosecute was a political one to placate the mobs.

Which completely undermines the criminal justice system. First, the cops may very well be guilty and this provides a technicality for having the charges tossed.

Assuming the charges aren't tossed, no matter what the eventual verdict is it will be called into serious question under the auspices of a prosecutor acting under political expediency.
