For the first time in war, coalition troops enter port city of Aden; more on their way

Saudi Arabia led at least 20 ground troops into Aden, Yemen Sunday to support loyalist militia fighting rebels, an official said.

“A limited coalition force entered Aden and another force is on its way” to the southern port city, said the government official and militia commander.

The Saudi-led coalition has been conducting an air war against the Houthi rebels and their allies since March 26 but this is the first reported ground deployment inside the country.

LOL! Yeah I have a feeling there’s a little more troops, but that is what we are being told.

AP story on Yahoo calls them ‘reconnaissance troops.’ Likely their version of special ops with appropriate language skills to gather intel.

Is it 1914 again already? One errant missile (and they happen: Vincennes/Airbus, the Stark, etc) and the entire region may detonate in a cascade of firepower.

-——Needs to be 20,000 not 20!-——

Does the kingdom has 20,000 soldiers ready to deploy?

My guess is no....

For too many years KSA had our boys handle their dirty work....

Now that the enemy is at their gate.... It’s getting real....

Guess Allah is asleep at the wheel....

Actually after the Israelis, the Saudis have one of the better militaries in the region. They spend quite lavishly on it.

I imagine if they are not sending in copious troops, it is because they got burned doing it before in the past. They did an intervention in Yemen a few decades back and it didn’t go well for them. Rather a quagmire from what I understand.

Thanks, I learn something new everyday here...

I figured KSA is so used to other people doing their work, they couldn't field a decent army...

Yeah, it is surprising in that sense. I lived in the UAE a long time ago, and I’m used to the ‘lazy native’ attitude.

However from what I understand in Saudi, the military is where the few of them with any drive go to accomplish something. They do a lot of training with our people and buy state of the art western equipment.

I think when Iraq took Kuwait in a walkover it put the fear of Allah into them. They really got on the ball after that.

Saudi Arabia sends ground forces into Yemen

That's a little extreme. All they needed to send was ground pork.

There are still about 100 American citizens left in Yemen. Abandoned by Obama along with $400 million in military hardware. Harf’s solution is make their way to a French frigate off shore.

The Saudis see Yemen as an existential issue for them, to a certain extent so do all the members of the Arab Coalition. The coalition was formed in a matter of days, once it was concluded that a)Obama had abandoned them, and b)Iran was soon going to be allowed to have nukes.

Inadvertently, Obama has created a situation whereby the issues of Israel, vis-a-vis Iran, now align with those of the Sunni Arab nations in the coalition. Even Turkey is making nice with Bibi now.

This may not be a bad development. Today a major Israeli general said publicly “we can take ‘em out”, referring to Iran’s nuke facilities. This is a profound statement and means that perhaps the Sunni Arabs have given Bibi the green light. Has anyone noticed how the Palestinian issue has gone to the back of the bus? Strange bedfellows in the Middle East now. A new alignment is forming, and Iran cannot win in Yemen if the Sunni nations have enough resolve.

A real President would take advantage of this situation. The new regional alignments make it possible to humiliate the Shia Persians now, and the Arab Street would be outwardly silent, inwardly relieved, IMHO.
