Nearly 900 miles to the west, meanwhile, investigators searched the Phoenix apartment of the suspects. A U.S. law enforcement official told The Washington Post that the attackers have been identified as Elton Simpson, 30 — who had previously been the target of a terror-linked probe — and his roommate, Nadir Soofi, as officials tried to piece together the planning behind the late Sunday attack that wounded one guard.

Last night when this happened I was watching Locked Up Abroad (the only thing on MSNBC I ever watch) and the MSNBC "news" folks broke in to report the incident. I left it on that channel for laughs, and it was amazing how much effort they spent to make sure we all knew that no one knows the possible motive and that it could be anything at all.

Later the spin shifted to "We have learned that extra security was on hand, which tells us that someone may have issued a threat before the event... but again, we can't speculate on any motive"
