16-year-old voters head to polls in Hyattsville

HYATTSVILLE, Md. - 16-year-old voters headed to the polls in Hyattsville Tuesday for an historic election -- the first since the town changed its minimum voting age.

The teens went to the polls to vote for elected offices in the city, including the mayor and ten council members.

The minimum voting age was changed earlier this year after a public hearing and a city council vote.

Hyattsville is the second city in the country to lower the voting age to 16 after Takoma Park did so two years ago.

Absolutely INSANE! A 16 y.o. doesn’t have the sense to come out of the rain let alone vote.

I certainly wasn’t informed enough to vote at 16. That was also the same year I happened upon Salon.com and clicked out of it right away. So I guess my BS detector was working even then.

Insane.....

Food for thought. Is it proper to let those who do not work take the wealth of those that do work? IE to let one vote for freebies at the expense of his neighbor?

I think that is just as insane as letting a 16 year old vote.

Will they have a separate ballot in elections that include statewide and presidential races?

I think there could be lawsuits on this very issue. The claim would be “equal protection” of the laws is being denied to these 16 and 17 year old voters. They will claim it’s discriminatory to allow them to vote for city offices, but not for other elective offices on the ballot.

If I’m not mistaken, the voting age is 18 in all states, as the 26th amendment sets that as a minimum voting age. But if states and localities can have an even lower voting age than called for in the 26th amendment, as apparently they can as we see places in Maryland doing this, it’s only a matter of time before we see high school kids voting everywhere.

I hope to be wrong on this prediction. Time will tell.

Hyattstown is tiny, with only a very few businesses and residences, so I would not worry too much about this.

Much like college kids the high school teachers would have no influence in how they vote.

So I guess my BS detector was working even then.

Which made you more qualified to vote than most 26 year olds.

Personally, I would like to see the voting age raised to age 26 with exceptions for the following:

  1. People serving in the military.
  2. People working full time and paying taxes.
  3. People who can pass a reasonably difficult test covering civics, government, history and economics.

Looking around at the hipster youth political boards, they seem to dislike Hillary. Yay.

Bad news is that they honestly think that Bernie Sanders is a genuine somebody and he's the right man for the White House. Aargh.

Deport everyone between the ages of 13 to 30 to Sweden, I say.

Why not let everyone vote? If a 12 year old girl is adult enough to get an abortion without her parents’ permission...

When I was 26 I cast a reluctant vote for McCain and swore to never participate in another campaign again. I may have to break that in 2016 if we have a conservative nominee.

It seems appropriate that in 1981 the Langley Punks made the film Hyattsville Holiday.

Their label was Travesty Films
