Or is it simply a run-of-the-mill training mission?

I really do not think this is routine or normal

Nor I. This is my comment to a subsequent post on this topic. Money is really tight now in the services and this is an expensive exercise so it is very important to certain powerful individuals. Why is this drill so important?

I spent over 35 years in the military and working as a civilian for the armed services over 20 years was spent in planning and running command post and field training exercises and as an operations officer. No exercise of this scope ever took place that I am aware of in CONUS, One has to ask who is the true adversary such a large and expensive (at a time when money is really tight in the Army) exercise is being gamed against. In the past this would read like a bad take off on ‘Seven Days in May’. Today it is very possible that old tome is inspiring the Mahdi’s men in the Pentagon and White House.
