Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said Wednesday he’ll make a “big announcement” regarding his 2016 presidential campaign plans May 27 in Pittsburgh.

Santorum couldn’t win a statewide election in his home state against an opponent who hid from the electorate, cowed to Arlen Specter for no particular political gain, and can’t present any credible record of being a fiscal conservative leader. Still, I hope he does run... Huckabee won’t last as long with Santorum spitting the social conservative issue votes/donations and they both deserve to lose.

I don’t think so. Most of these candidates will draw votes away from RINO frontrunners Jeb Bush and Chris Christie (if he runs). This will allow Ted Cruz to outclass and outflank.

Perhaps Hillary Clinton should switch to the republican ticket.

Totally agree. Plus it sets up a circular firing squad during debates, splinters the conservative vote, and gives Bush a better chance of winning the nomination...not a good thing.

I have a hard time understanding the egos of these men who are jumping into the race. Most of them don’t have a chance at the nomination...I wonder if it’s about the possibility of being the VP nominee? I really don’t understand their reasoning for running. The campaign funds are also splintered by an ever increase list of candidates.

It’s not ego for these people. It’s a business. They can run around the country for a few months, raise campaign cash, get plenty of face time in the media, get a book deal out of it, and then leverage that into Beltway “business opportunities” that often pay them at taxpayers’ expense.

Thanks for the comments. I think your circular firing squad comments are great. It’s something I hadn’t thought to address yet.

I’m not sure if folks remember this or not, but many times the general election is preceded by candidates hurling information obtained during the debates their political foes participated in.

We don’t do our selves a favor by running more debates than the other party, and that goes double for the number of candidates running on our side. It just allows for more vicious infighting during which we destroy our own guys.

Good point.

It’s a terrible thing. Chaos does NOT win anything. There will be no focus, no leading. It will be minutia and infighting.

Yes indeed. It will be a circular firing squad, with most of the candidates firing upon whoever is in the lead at that particular moment.

And Hillary, O'Malley, Liawatha or whoever the democrat nominee is will be taking notes for future use against the eventual nominee. "Listen to what his fellow Republicans said about him, his plan for this, his views on that"

"We are going to have at least a dozen major candidates running for the GOP nomination.

Not a bad thing."

I honestly don't see how. The debate stage will be packed with also-rans again. The serious candidates will be able to squeeze in two or three answers.
