On average each day in America, 85 people die from injuries related to guns. Amid a "violent spring in Milwaukee" come new calls for public health approaches to address persistent gun violence, as Journal Sentinel columnist James Causey did in his April 26 column "I'm not satisfied with just enough".
are safe; preparing for quick, strong responses to disasters; improving birth outcomes and reducing chronic disease.
How does a public health approach work?
Public health practice focuses on prevention. We shape programs, policies and products to promote health and wellness, and protect the public from dangerous exposures. And if already in harm's way, we work to keep it from spreading and from happening again.
Case in point: When driver education alone did not work to prevent motor vehicle injuries, public health worked with industry and government to design safer cars, build better roads, improve seat belts and set speed limits to lower the risk of death and disability. In one generation, public health campaigns have changed social norms about drinking and driving, and everybody buckles up.
Public health's wide lens looks at populations and places to find comprehensive solutions. Our investigative tools harness the power of data to more fully describe community problems and assets. We search for patterns and predictors over time, across many cases, in hardest hit places. We evaluate what really works, what doesn't and why.
The skilled practice of public health forges collaboration across systems and sectors to break down the silos that keep us apart, and connects the dots to unite many efforts. Milwaukee has shown how a combination of solutions plus a full-court press by a communitywide collaborative can bring down teen birthrates.

No word on when the editorial writers will opine on Islam as a public health issue.
I’m sure ISIS recruiters just love reading articles like these.
(They were averaging 800 from 1970-2000, by the way.)
Blame the guns, not the cultural issues in large parts of urban black communities. The numbers on who is doing most the killing, and who is doing most of the dying, are clear.
Take firearms away from black males and U.S. murder rates drop below most of Europe. So if you are going to violate civil rights, why not go after the actual problem?
You see its a racist civil rights violation to take away rights based on race, but its OK to violate everyone's civil rights.
Yeah, because “public health” efforts have been so successful at stopping heart disease, obesity, drug use, alcoholism, domestic abuse, depression. I’m sure similar efforts at stopping gun violence will be equally successful. ;-/
Right. So I guess this article is advocating a “public health approach” that includes giving everyone a gun and training them in gun safety and self defense. / sarc
Excellent point. The fact that these people are *not* advocating for this obvious solution is telling. It tells me public safety is not really what they are all about. Power, control, and disarmed subjects are what they are after.
-during the run-up to Wisconsin changing from one of the most anti-concealed carry states to one of the best, the J-S was right there in the forefront, harping on the "gunfights everywhere, shootouts at every stop sign" etc., --
--now that Wisconsin has over 200,000 concealed carry permits issued with almost zero offenses by the permittees, I have seen one article admitting this--and obviously , they are back at the same old propaganda game---

Quit attacking our rights and work on a cure for athlete's foot, you hacks.

“Public Health Approach” is just double speak for “give us more power”. The assumption is that the wielders of power are benevolent, neutral solution seekers, when in fact, they are ideologically blinded, power seekers who ignore facts to feather their own nests and advance their agenda.
—yep—and the J-S has been blathering this tripe for years—
