Texas House panel approves full legalization of marijuana

In a surprise move that supporters hailed as a historic victory, the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee approved legislation Wednesday that would make it legal to buy and sell marijuana in the state.

Two Republicans joined with the panel's three Democrats in support, giving House Bill 2165 a decisive 5-2 victory.

The proposal, which would make Texas the fifth state in America to OK pot for recreational purposes, has virtually no chance of clearing any other hurdles on the path to becoming law in this year's legislative session.

Still, advocates described the committee vote as a big step toward future success.

"Marijuana policy reform continues to make unprecedented progress this session," Phillip Martin of the liberal group Progress Texas tweeted just after the vote....

Simpson, a deeply conservative member supported by the tea party, sponsored the bill. In an opinion piece published last month, he explained that, "I don't believe that when God made marijuana he made a mistake that government needs to fix."

Austin.

They oughta fence it in, with strict controls on who can leave and when.

You don’t want this kind of stuff to spread.

Austin wins, Texas loses. Keep open up our boarders to documented liberals and that slippery slop becomes bigger than the world class slide at Schlitterbahn

A country full of legal potheads is a scary future.

Maybe so, but the sponsor of the bill was a conservative tea party guy from rural Longview.

If they are going to legalize it, do the tobacco thing and tax the hell out of it.

Tobacco use is going down. Anybody surprised?

A stoned society is a peaceful, compliant society. The “cream” will still rise to the top and the feral will be lulled to sleep with their free Gov’t issued dope. And with robots and advanced computer systems poised to take away another 30% of the available job base, there’s going to be a lot more people on the “Free Stuff” Gov’t reservations, including places like Baltimore, Detroit, Indy, Cincy, Clevelaand, Philadelphia, Chicago, and St. Louis.

Better they be stoned than they be stoning you!

I don't smoke tobacky, but I think I saw that it's pushing ten bucks a pack in high tax states. That's a pretty significant load for a heavy smoker.

Following the money, you can see why the powers that be are demonizing e-cigs, even though they should be far less oncogenic, because the tar is absent. It's about the money, honey!

Pot is funny in that way, because unless you're a total stoner, you don't need very much. The taxes could be very high as a multiple of production cost without economically burdening users. It just costs too much to have a 3-pack a day habit--or be a heavy boozer.

So what happens when you have millions of unemployable potheads? Who is going to pay for their welfare? And don’t tell me they won’t get it.

That’s why fiscal conservatism cannot exist without social conservatism. I used to believe it could, but no more.

Good. Force a showdown and take Wickard v Filburn to the woodshed.

won't be long till most, if not all states, legalize pot.

tax revenue is the only reason...

In the month of February, Denver alone generated $1.3 million in tax revenue...over a million in one month!!

Some pesky facts for you =>

Colorado's welfare spending is $400 per capita vs a $700 average of for all states. Colorado's growth rate is 3.6% vs 2.1% nationally.

The Colorado Department of Numbers says CO's unemployment rate is 4.2% vs 5.5% nationally.

Now you are talking. This isn’t about legalizing MJ since it is still a federal crime. It is the only Constitutional push back alive today. Congress and their laws are out of control, and the only push from below, is against MJ? Sort of astounding, but at least something is pushing. Wickard V Filburn was certainly another of those Supreme Court disasters as evidence of one shouldn’t want government running the country.

I’d love to argue the point but I have to go to work. We already have a welfare class and they are allergic to work. MJ is expensive and you need a job to support the use, so I’m calling BS on the premise, but all we have to do is wait and see because there are enough states with legal use that the evidence will be available shortly.

Now, we just need to declare marijuana use a disability and provide financial support. The collapse of society can be accelerated.
