Remaining female candidates must restart Ranger training after missing mark in 1st phase
Fox News ^ | May 8, 2015

None of the remaining eight female candidates going through the Army Ranger School made it out of the first phase of training at Fort Benning, Ga., defense officials told Fox News -- though they scored high enough to try again as early as next week.

The candidates were the first women to train for the elite force as part of a program that began in February.

While they did not do well enough to move on to the next phase of training, an Army Ranger statement said the eight women -- along with 101 men in the same situation -- will be "recycled," meaning they can re-do the training phase in an upcoming Ranger School session.

A total of 60 women were originally slated to participate in Ranger Assessment Phase (RAP), according to the Pentagon in January. The Army Times reported in February that 100 women went into the pre-training phase, and in April, 19 women qualified for the first training phase, known as Darby. Within days, that number was down to eight.

In the summer of ‘72 I completed a three-week “Ranger-lite” class, in which we generally got to eat and sleep more-or-less regularly most of the time.

It darned-near killed me.

I don't care who attempts Ranger School as long as the standards are not lowered. Once they are lowered then becoming a Ranger will have no meaning.

Kinda like getting one of these:

Ranger School is no walk in the park (well, actually it is a verrry long walk in at least one national park). The combination of little food and sleep deprivation pushes everyone to the edge, turns your mind to mush, and makes you incredibly prone to injuries and illness. I can certainly say that I hit a wall in city week/Darby phase and came dangerously close to getting recycled.

Lots of Rangers get recycled for injuries, failed patrols, pneumonia, and cellulitus. I knew several guys who were recycled at least two times, and remember the Ranger NCOIC of Darby when I was there, MSG Black, who spent @ six months in Ranger School because he had been recycled in multiple phases of the course for injuries & illnesses.

There is no dis-honor in failing to graduate Ranger School, and do-overs are certainly not easy for anyone — and they don’t give you the tab for failing.

Indeed, the prohibition should not be absolute, but, as you say. it cannot be but rare. Like expecting a woman to play major league baseball. Softball, they can almost cut it, but not hardball.

The first phase is a lot of head games and weeding out the weak and unmotivated.
Mountain phase almost enjoyable. You actually get a fair amount of sleep.
Florida phase is just pure endurance after the first few days.

No place for a woman IMO.

Send them to NYC's fire department.

They just graduated a female even though she flunked the physical agility test, but excelled in their academics.

This is a political power play by the feminists. It has nothing whatsoever to do with preparing for combat or improving our defense capability. Women will be promoted to General Officer, or selected for command on other capabilities and potential. I don’t think that a Ranger Tab will make a big difference one way or the other.

It is good to hear that at least one borough isn’t completely socialist.

Are you kidding. Second and third generation Italian and irish are very conservative. Except for the union Aholes. And even those idiots vote repub in the presidential race.
Staten island has highest income, grades, and lowest crime of all boroughs.

I told this story already, but about 14 years ago one of Obama’s sons walked into my neighborhood deli and touched GF’s butt.
The next ten minutes were very painful for him.
Indian owner (on paper at least) told me to leave afterwards and no one could seem to remember what I looked like :)

I highly doubt any woman is going to pass the full Ranger qualifications.

even an Olympic athlete level woman is not a comparison to a man that can pass the qualifications. Nowhere near upper body strength, nowhere near the lung capacity. Nowhere near the mental toughness for these particular reasons (they could be as or more mentally tough for different reasons, just not these reasons).

“ I hope the female candidates that attempt again will not have lower standards.”

GWJack, your nephew is likely a graduate of Airbirne training...he may be able to tell you about lowered standards. At Airborne school we had to do ten chinups before each meal. Why? Steering with the T10-C parachute took upper body strength. Ok...no big deal.

So every mess hall at the Airbirne School has a set of chinup bars outside. One is 7-8 feet off the ground. And right next to it - a bar three feet off the ground for women to use lying on thier back. I guess they didnt need to steer - even though it endangers all the jumpers up in the air with them.

Airborne School used to be a six week gut check. Now its three weeks and women lie on thier backs doing chinups. I fear Rangdr School will go the same way.

I have met college kids who have told me that they go to school here in FL and vote in this state and also vote on their home state.

Yes they say it with smiles on their faces or laughing

Thank you for your service.

When I was at Ft. Benning for my nephew’s graduation I got to see the Airborne grounds, and troops. I marveled at the rigor and discipline I saw.
Although I didn’t observe any training, I did notice that there weren’t any females. I saw the demonstration of what was taught at the Ranger graduation. I can understand your statement about upper body strength - it was certainly evident in some of the demo drills.

There is a reason why 10 chin ups is important, just as all other measurable standards are. They are designed to get the “few” to a certain minimum level of proficiency. Standards are established for a reason, and should be completed by all, regardless of gender. Common adversity, training, bonds all those that endure the same events. If some skirt the experience there will be uneasiness with them.

Again, thank you for your service.

Hi sf,

Thank you for your service.

There is an old saw about law school - the first year they scare you to death, the second year they work you to death, and the third year they bore you to death. It sounds like Your Ranger training is similar, but on a physical level.

Yes, the first phase is important to weed out quitters and those not able. No criticism of them, just recognition of facts. We want leaders that won’t quit under pressure in the field. The training eliminates those weak physically and mentally. i think that the 400+ graduates that I saw would embody the mental tenor of leadership demonstrated by my nephew. He’s told me of his first day on his first trip to Afghanistan he was faced with a tough decision. At least it would be tough for the weak. They spotted an unexplored IED in the road. He was the ranking officer and had to decide who should approach it. He dropped his gear and did it himself, knowing that his platoon would follow him in future events.

He has told me that the mountains of Afghanistan are nowhere close to rigorous as the mountain training in Ranger school. I admire those of you that have attempted/completed the program. It has given me much inspiration as I run in marathons. I think of the extended time that stress is put upon the body. The few hours I spend running is nothing compared to the Ranger training.

Only a few Olympic sports are not separated by sex. Equestrian where the horse provides strength, and shooting where small muscles and breath/heart control is the key. I can’t think of any other, but there may be one or two out there.

Women compete in extreme endurance sports, but against other women (they will certainly beat all men except men in endurance sports). These athletes have great endurance, but lack strength and have a very combination of body fat, muscle, and cardio tuning that only works for the sports requirements. Some Ranger events do them in. Those women also tend to have small frames and would be prone to injuries when carry heavy loads.

Women with larger frames may be better suited to the strength requirements of Ranger, but are unlikely to handle the endurance stuff. Ranger School is carefully crafted to push men beyond their ability in the setting of infantry combat activities. Men who succeed overcome the mental obstacles in an environment that is beyond their physical limitations. Women, with a different set of physical capabilities should not be expect to do this. If you adjust the course that allows women to be successful, then the whole point of the training is lost for men. Is that what we ought to do to accommodate feminist fantasies?
