You might want to call FedEx and see if they will deliver a letter from Nome, Alaska to Tupelo, Mississippi for 49 cents.

Is that meant as an excuse to justify continued government involvement?

Do commodities that are basic necessities cost more in Nome because of its location, too?

Good point...the for profit competitors don't have to fully fund their pension obligations every year either.
