Dr Carson is am amateur in that he comes from a real background as opposed to politics. He is not (yet) adept at lying, spin and parsing.

So true and that is what gets him in trouble because it gives the media all sorts of opportunities to ambush him.

The difference between him and a politician is he is a real person and not a pandering dissembler. The difference between him and a major media hack is he is a real person and not a lying dissembler.

To put a finer point on it, Dr Carson does not wish to succumb to the flaws of a politician. He does not choose to lie.
