Republicans: Dems reneged on trade deal
Washington Examiner ^ | 5-12-2015 | Susan Ferrechio

Senate Republicans Tuesday accused Democrats of reneging on deal that would give President Obama "fast track" authority to approve trade pacts.

Senate Finance panel Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Democrats broke an agreement struck in committee that Trade Promotion Authority legislation would move separately from two provisions dealing with trade enforcement and preferences.

"This demand materialized last week and came from the Senate Democratic leadership, virtually all of whom oppose TPA and their president outright," Hatch said, moments after Democrats voted to block the trade bill.

Democrats said Tuesday they opposed the bill because they wanted the legislation to include the two additional provisions. One would add language to curb trade violations, such as currency manipulation. A second provision, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), would extend a law allowing duty-free imports from sub-Saharan nations in Africa.

Democrats - Doing the job republicans won’t do!

Democrats voted it down but for the wrong reasons.

Republicans should have been 100% against this.

Who would have ever thought that it would take democrats to defeat Obama and the Republicans? Again, what is going on with Republicans is beyond human comprehension. It is a betrayal seldom seen in the United States.

Might have to take another look at Democrats. They seem more conservative than the GOP lately.

I always get a kick out of Democrats in R jerseys complaining about real Democrats chicanery.

There is no excuse for naivity. Dems don’t follow deals. Repubs know this. This is just play-acting for the audience.

“The text of TPP emphasizes that it is a “living agreement.” Translated out of bureaucratese code language, that means the text of TPP can be changed in major and minor ways by executive action after Congress OKs the document.”

From Phillys Schafly’s article

Also...

“Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., today blasted the secrecy shrouding the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations.

“They said, well, it’s very transparent. Go down and look at it,” said Boxer on the floor of the Senate. “Let me tell you what you have to do to read this agreement. Follow this: you can only take a few of your staffers who happen to have a security clearance — because, God knows why, this is secure, this is classified. It has nothing to do with defense. It has nothing to do with going after ISIS.”

Boxer, who has served in the House and Senate for 33 years, then described the restrictions under which members of Congress can look at the current TPP text.

“The guard says, ‘you can’t take notes.’ I said, ‘I can’t take notes?’” Boxer recalled. “‘Well, you can take notes, but have to give them back to me, and I’ll put them in a file.’ So I said: ‘Wait a minute. I’m going to take notes and then you’re going to take my notes away from me and then you’re going to have them in a file, and you can read my notes? Not on your life.’”

I must have missed it. When was the first time the Dems neged? Mustn’t they have neged to be able to have reneged?

“Democrats voted it down but for the wrong reasons.”

One of the reasons is that the AFL-CIO (against all trade bills) has frozen all contributions to democrats. The corresponding wrong reasons for the Republicans is just the opposite; their big money people are for it.

We should pay really close attention to any republican who wants to make “deals” with this president and then do all we can to get rid of them.

This is now old. I don’t much like the source, either, but who knows.

Any minute now Obama’s press secretary will be appearing before a podium to explain that Obama does not consider this a snub by Congressional Democrats.
