Female officer was attacked by furious demonstrators who accused her of shooting at people taking part in a riot

The huge crowd managed to separate her from colleagues and chased her down a street in the capital Bujumbura

The policewoman was punched, kicked and dragged along the streets, suffering minor injuries to her head

But thanks to her brave colleagues and the help of a few passers-by, the woman managed to escape to safety

Officers opened fire on demonstrators amid furious clashes on the streets of the capital Bujumbura, as Pierre Nkurunziza defied international pressure to cease his latest campaign for president. Shortly after the shots were fired, the policewoman was punched, kicked and dragged along the streets of the capital Bujumbura by a furious mob who managed to separate her from her colleagues. Harrowing images show the woman attempting to flee for her life while knife and stone-wielding men fight among themselves to reach her. Eventually the female officer's colleagues managed to get between her and her attackers, enabling her to flee to safety with only minor injuries.

At least one protester died in today's violence, while two others were reportedly killed overnight in a grenade explosion. The latest deaths bring the number killed in more than two weeks of anti-government protests to more than 20 and come as African leaders prepare to hold a crisis meeting in Tanzania tomorrow. Over 50,000 Burundians have fled into neighbouring nations since the unrest began.

Burundi is 2.5% Muslim, 62% Catholic, 24% Protestant. It’s similar ethnically to neighboring Rwanda, where they had the huge massacres.

They look to be much poorer than the people in Baltimore. I’m sure they have legit reasons to riot. Too bad there are no Quik Stops and CVS stores to burn down.

I can’t help but wonder if there’s a “riot” gene.

I would not have guessed in a thousand years that the capital of Burundi was Bujumbura.
