Perhaps potatoes are the Russian eqivalent of a Christmas gift of coal

I hope it's some kind of Russian style insult.
Any Russian experts here who can tell what it could mean?

Russians can have a bizarre sense of humor, and potatoes are popular as a subject matter. However, divining which potato joke was directed at Kerry is not easy, which in its own right is part of the joke.
Guaranteed it would be an off color joke. Americans can be very prudish at times.

They look more stately than Kerry’s beat up face.
To: bestintxas
It was an insult.
Kerry is an Irish name. The Irish came to the U.S. because of the Potato Famine.
Kerry’s wife’s family made a lot of money off tomatoes.
The Russians just called him a poor, gold digger.
