Following a Monday court hearing, a Kentucky couple living what they call a “simple, back-to-basics life” in a rural, off-the-grid shack has lost custody, at least temporarily, of their 10 children. Joe and Nicole Naugler — who are expecting an 11th child in October — will remain under investigation by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), while their kids, ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years old, will stay in the agency’s custody.

Here’s one where 7 kids were removed from the home because they found a mineral supplement that’s completely legal, but the FACS ppl thought it might be dangerous — even though the kids weren’t taking it.

I imagine that Joe Naugler has a wallet full of cash that he got by operating a still.

???

You claimed “entitled to due process of law” - They first had a court hearing.

You said “without judge or jury” but a judge presided of the hearing.

I’m not an expert in this case or child custody, but my wife and I now raise a child not our own, due to the actions of both their parents. I do speak with a little experience in child custody. I am interested in the well being of children.

Not the way I would want to live, but seems like government overreach.
“The allegations were that the family was residing in a tent, mother had given birth in a tent, there is no running water or septic, none of the children were enrolled in school and the father threatened a neighbor with a gun(asked child to hand him a gun)”

Look...they took their children, without having a judge or jury involved. Just an anonymous complaint. Without due process of law. Without the 4th or 5th amendment. Without first proving they were guilty of anything. They do the same with asset forfeiture. But that’s life in your land of the “free”.

“Yeah, but they’ve taken their kids...all without judge or jury.”

I’m pretty sure that child welfare still needs to get a warrant from a judge to remove children.

How did they a court hearing without having a judge involved? CPS had been visiting this family on location for multiple times over a couple years prior to this event. It wasn't a single surprise visit.

I served 6 years in the US Infantry. I am very much aware of the requirements for basic sanitation. Even the placement of out houses and field latrines, their construction and their maintenance require a certain level of investment in time and effort.

It is obvious from the photos of the “home” (actually sticks stuck in the ground with a tarp overhead) that the children were not being cared for even at the most basic levels.

You’re so right. The pattern on her bandana doesn’t even remotely match the pattern of her shirt. And they’re both hideous, to boot. /s

May your neighbors never file an anonymous complaint against you.

My father in law and his sisters and parents lived in a concrete shed for several months after their house burned. Must have been back in the 20s.

I do not believe your assumptions are correct. According to other sources (see below) the children were not on the property when the Sheriff first responded to the weapon complaint by the neighbor. The father said a warrant would be required for the police to see the children. There is more to this than the Sheriff showing up and immediately grabbing the kids.

Please know that there is so much more to know about the Nauglers than meets the eye in this case: allegations of theft, illegal transportation, fleeing the law, threatening neighbors with death, child neglect, and more. Homeschoolers and unschoolers that actually know the family are cautioning people that this family is troubled. HA blog partner Kathryn Brightbill is working on a summary of the situation that we will crosspost and share once it is complete. (It is complete! Read it here.) In the mean time, please exercise caution (and encourage your friends on social media to do so as well) before promoting their story and/or giving them money.

Too late, it has happened, and also by family members regarding the same child I mentioned above.

But there was due process, the child remained protected and in our custody, not that of the genetic parents.

And if you judge our situation by a few paragraphs representing only the mothers point of view, you would like be against us as well.

OMG, how dare people live in a tent, give birth in a tent, or not enroll their kids in school? Sorry, but if thats the best allegations the state can make they should butt out.

That isn't all the allegations of the state, just a few of the items posters want to focus on and ignore the rest.

No, smart ass. There’s something wrong in her eyes, like this is having the effect of abuse on her. And my sense was confirmed: another post says that the oldest kid is claiming physical and sexual abuse.

Closer to wrong as in “a woman that is likely to drown her children in that pond.” Or wrong as in “survivor of terrible abuse.” It’s the feminine equivalent of the thousand-yard gaze.

Don’t get me wrong: anyone can take a bad photo. But this is what her family chose as representing their peacefulness... and instead there is a haunting gaze of desperate resignation.

Yes, people living in a tent even through the winter, even giving birth in a tent, is seriously worth an investigation. And this action comes after a three-year investigation. Our forefathers didn’t live in tents! Even they built log cabins with fireplaces and hearths.
