A surveillance camera near the Tuesday night derailment of an Amtrak train caught the flashes of the accident.

On grainy, dark video, the flashes of the actual accident can be seen, CNN is reporting

The Timetable speed is 110 mph north of the reverse curve (the train derail at the southernmost curve). Word on the street in Philly is that the train was doing 108 when it hit the 50 mph curve.

That sounds insane... I guess the black box will tell the story on that one. I suspect they already have an idea on the speed since the control room has monitoring stuff in place as well. I took a tour (with my IEEE group) of the Amtrak control room way up top in 30'th st station around 25 years ago, and even then they had a pretty elaborate board showing the locations and speeds of all the trains on the area tracks.

My car's GPS lets me know what the local speed limit is, versus how fast I'm going (needless to say, that little box is usually red).

It does not seem like it would be expensive to have a governor on each train which would not permit the train to go faster than the track limit.

Based on the extreme damage to the train cars and the fact every one of them derailed, it was going way too fast. Plus on a curve.

Haven’t seen any reports on the motorman. I assume he is dead ?
