I have no idea how long it normally takes for someone to work their way up the ladder to driving the train. I’d imagine they would want them to “apprentice” for a few years at least, only observing, but then I have no direct knowledge, I’m just guessing.
I think it’s two years. A coworker of mine’s brother is an Amtrak employee. I’m just outside Philly.

He apparently had been with Amtrak at least 8 years as a conductor then engineer and worked part time at Target while in college.
10+ years from new hire to conductor - he’s not even an engineer yet for coal trains! - for my (straight, white, married, male, union) brother-in-law.
