Actually , as executions go, it would be unusual, surely, but not "cruel" It would surely be near instantaneous. No pain, just instant disintegration. The executee would feel no more pain than the successful detonator of a powerful bomb vest would feel. No lingering.

It got so bad that Stalin had a buzzer installed at the speaker’s podium. He would used the buzzer when he was satisfied with the audience’s response.
My brigade commander was famous for falling asleep during briefings. He did so once when the Chief of Staff of the Army was sitting between he and I during an after action review in a briefing van at the National Training Center in the Mojave Desert.
