A passenger traveling along the same route the night that Amtrak Train 188 derailed in Philadelphia told NBC News that an object hit his train, shattering the window.

The account from Johns Hopkins student Justin Landis makes him the third person to report a projectile hitting a train Tuesday night in that area, and comes a day after the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators were working to determine whether something struck the doomed Amtrak train before it derailed. Eight people were killed and about 200 others were injured in the accident.

Getting “rocked,” as locomotive engineers call it, is so common on the Northeast
Corridor that trains long had metal grills over their windshields to act as armor.
These days, thick glass is specifically designed to withstand the impact of a
cinder block. Amtrak officials say trains are pelted in the neighborhoods around of
the crash site monthly.

Seems to be a recurring event along the NE Corridor.

Not terrorists, but likely some self-entitled brats throwing rocks.

Hopefully, they will soon be looking at 8 counts of capital murder.

Operator error maybe. But going twice the speed posted and accelerating into a corner doesn't appear to be normal.

Need more information; hopefully it will come out.

Someone has already mentioned the “hacking” possibility. I thought that the engineer just screwed up and accelerated 25 MPH instead of slowing 25 MPH. Shortly before they reached the curve, the train was going 75 MPH. He should have slowed 25 MPH to the 50 MPH limit for that curve. Instead he speeded up 25 MPH to 100 MPH.

I dont know that there is any correlation whatsover between any projectiles and the sudden increase in speed...bu the engineer. at this point.

Im still surprised that “rocking” the trains as throwing rocks at them is euphemistically referred to, is so prevalent...such as in this case, with three trains getting hit within a few minutes, in the same general location.

No thank goodness

I read that the windows are reinforced to the degree that a cinder block cant “make it through” them.

You hear about teenagers throwing bricks and large rocks from overpasses, never heard about people throwing things at trains, I can understand by something hitting the train, it could cause the train to get out of control but Ive never heard of an object causing a train to go from 50mph to 106mph in a matter of seconds

I think the questions about the German Pilot’s suicide into the side of that mountain..are quite relevant to this guy’s state of mind..and behavior.

If the Germanwings pilot had survived the crash he could have easily said “I dont remember what happened” could have easily claimed to have had a seizure or something that caused him not to be able to open the door for the other pilot..I guess the question is, how do you prove the Engineer really has no memory of what happened, can’t prove it unless you give him a lie detector test

Id say it might be quite appropriate to administer a lie detector test to this sad sack engineer.

He should be approached with the matter in order to help him clear his.... “good name”. Only a completely knuckle headed bozo would try to opt out of such a plan.

” Ive never heard of an object causing a train to go from 50mph to 106mph in a matter of seconds.”

Nor have I. That’s not bad acceleration for a car. It would seem to be full on amazing for a train.

if the media is protecting him..we wont know “officially”...for decades, at the very least.

Here's a wild theory:

Somebody tries to blackmail, threaten or retaliate against the engineer for something, and tells the engineer they're going to get him and/or his train.

The threatening party doesn't know exactly what train the engineer is one (or does and uses the earlier train as a warm up). The engineer, for whatever reason (embarrassment, compromise, blackmail, etc), doesn't report the threat, but when he realizes his train has been ambushed, tries to speed through the kill zone, and then slams on the brake when he realizes his train won't make the curve.

given the engineers social proclivities...that might indeed be plausible
