'Skidding', as I learned it, is an unbalanced turn, where you haven't applied the proper amount of rudder to match the angle of bank. (There is the Turn and Bank instrument, where you step on the ball to balance the turn.)

You might be thinking of 'crabbing' which is forcing the aircraft to yaw, by the application of rudder. This is handy if you want to scrub off airspeed during landing. or the crosswind is shoving you sideways during landing. That's what the pilot is doing on the GIF.

Years back, there were two crashes of airliners where a hydraulic valve malfunctioned, slamming the rudder hard over. This sent the aircraft into an uncontrollable roll, and the pilot fought it all the way to the ground. He didn't make it.

But, sideways? Nope.

From what I read in the article “flying sideways” seems to be a bad description. He made one engine climb, so that should make the plane roll.

I think he means the wing was pointed up, so the plane itself was sideways, not flying sideways.

According to the articles I can find, a skid is yaw in a turn caused by applying too much down rudder. It’s the opposite of a slip.

Crabbing is aligning the airplane with the wind as you approach the runway, rather than aligning it with the runway. When you get to the runway, like that video posted above, you “kick out the crab” and align it with the runway, dropping a wing if necessary to keep from drifting with the wind.

Applying the rudder to help lose airspeed would be slipping.
