U.S. Republicans claim enough votes to pass fast-track trade bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top Republicans predicted on Sunday that both chambers of Congress would muster the votes to pass the "fast-track" authority sought by President Barack Obama to negotiate major trade deals, despite opposition from Obama's fellow Democrats.

"Yes, we’ll pass it. We'll pass it later this week," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview with ABC.

Republican U.S. Representative Paul Ryan said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he was confident the measure would also pass the House of Representatives.

"We will have the votes," said Ryan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. "We're doing very well. We're gaining a lot of steam and momentum."

Up until Nancy said that, only doctors used that phrase. They would be referring to a stool sample.....

I get the distinct impression the DC crowd is trying to push the republic into a civil war.

Because the Dems are worse right?

Curiously, as the Democrats oppose Obama more, and the Republicans support Obama more, it may actually come to pass that the Democrats are better.

Not by much, but hey, who knows. Stranger stuff has happened -- like when the former Soviets warned us about going communist.

Going by the actual actions of the two, Yup. The Dems really are better. Disgusting as that reality is, at least they don’t try telling us they will govern conservatively and constitutionally. I would rather deal with open liars and communists like the Dems than the enemy within any day of the week. At least you always know where you stand and what to expect.

Some people here think thats nuts. Well then perhaps they would care to explain, in detail, why it is that an open communist in front of you is worse than a political Brutus behind you. Because that is a very literal metaphor these days when the GOP smiles lovingly as the knife goes in our backs. At least the Dem has the courage to shoot us point blank in the political face and we have a chance to dodge the bullet.

What gets me is all the people here and elsewhere that think they are so much smarter than the founders. Hamilton said it flat out. Better the enemy in their own camp than yours. 250ish years do not make it one iota less true. So who should we listen to. Modern political savants or the people that built the country’s system of government? Either the founders were wrong or the lesser evils are.

Not a hard call to me.

The history: “Congress started the fast track authority in the Trade Act of 1974. This authority was set to expire in 1980, but was extended for eight years in 1979. It was renewed in 1988 for five years to accommodate negotiation of the Uruguay Round, conducted within the framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). It was then extended to one day after the Uruguay Round concluded in the Marrakech Agreement, transforming the GATT into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Pursuant to that grant of authority, Congress then enacted implementing legislation for the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Area, the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the Uruguay Round Agreements Act.”

We should have left Harry Reid and the Ds in charge of the Senate. It’s the same outcome.

Representative Paul Ryan says that every president since FDR has had Fast Track Trade Authority. Politifact rates that statement as “half true.”

Thank you there, Mr. New German. The history is important.

Republican Presidents, Nixon, Ford, Reagan....in the olden days...asked for and received "Fast Track". They did this because Democrats injected, not labor issues, but Human Rights issues into the grand mix of International negotiations.

Now, it's a whole 'nuther agenda.

It's all about the industries that are in favor in DC (Silicon Valley particularly, but Banking/Finance in a BIG WAY too) getting their payoff for a couple of decades of campaign finance.

And payola.

The money is THINK on K Street.

The program is to fleece America, not just stored capital...but to use America's capital to finance a fundamental transfer of wealth and power.

These people aim to destroy this nation.

This is stunning and unbelievable! How could anyone vote for a hidden 800 page piece of crap?

Guess they have to pass it to see what's in it.

As I have always said, If the Repos & Crates are allowed to do their business in Wash. DC nothing will ever change; But if we force them to live and work at home they might have to finally go to work for the people that voted for them.

Whoever can get a hold of Rush, Hannity, Levin, etc. have their listeners fax, email, call EVERY representative to promise them they’ll be primaried if not recalled if they vote for this secret crap. Boehner and McConnell have to go!

SHUT DOWN THE SWITCHBOARDS - Every one of them is up for election in 2016.

4 am reminder bump! ; -)

Publish the darn thing so we can all read it before it passes.

It's probably way to complex and full of undecipherable legalese. Even they don't really understand it all. They are doing us a favor by not letting us worry our poor heads over all the really complex nuances involved. We need to just trust them because that keeps working out so well.

Recalled by whom? All of us who have spent hours calling and writing letters before this?

I’m sure you still think you’re in the America that hasn’t existed for some years now. Radio personalities and politicians aren’t about to come out with the unvarnished truth either. The nature of their job demands that they must walk the tightrope between issues artfully and carefully. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be heard anyway. That applies to any and all members of Congress. The New World Order does not allow a nation like the United States of America once was to exist. It isn’t fair, don’t you know.
Every one of these politicians believe that they are enlightened as to how to bring about world peace and what is in the best interest of us, the unwashed masses. It’s a delusion on their part but it won’t change just because the populace objects.

You will live, work with and for, eat and drink, live in housing that is equal or lesser than the lowest dreg in the pond. You will not be allowed personal aggrandizement or material gain above that standard. “Equality for all”

1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say: “Peace and security;” then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape.

Get ready.

There is no constitutional recall process for Congressmen and Senators.
