As the toll from shootings continues to increase in Milwaukee — including 11 people injured in seven separate shootings over the weekend — state Sen. Nikiya Harris Dodd is asking the community to not forget about the grass-roots efforts in the neighborhoods most affected by the violence.

And she's right. Those efforts are critical; if neighbors don't work together to take back their neighborhoods block by block those neighborhoods have little chance of becoming safer places. That work is happening in many city neighborhoods; Harris Dodd pointed to several such efforts in a meeting with the Editorial Board on Monday, especially the "Blueprint for a Safe Milwaukee" that emerged from a Unite Milwaukee Summit meeting in March put together by the state senator and a number of other volunteers and organizations. Other such efforts include the annual Ceasefire Sabbath event this past Sunday and the Peace Project by Walnut Way, a nonprofit organization that was known for creating orchards on vacant city lots and promoting health and wellness but has become a leading force in the anti-violence effort.

But what's also needed is better coordination between all such efforts at the neighborhood level as well as with efforts by police, local elected officials and the state Legislature, including tougher laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. As we've said in several recent editorials, a coordinated strategy that encompasses neighbors, churches, police, local and state officials, nonprofits and businesses has the best chance of curbing the violence that has raised homicide numbers to three times what they were a year ago.

“...including tougher laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals...”

Nice idea. We need another ten thousand laws so the criminals can ignore them, too.

The good men and women in Milwaukee need to arm themselves and protect their families. I would be interested to see the arrest records of the people shot.

Milwaukee has a solution to increased violence that was succinctly outlined by Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke:

Milwaukee County Sheriff: ‘You Have A Duty To Protect Yourself’

Follow the sheriff’s advice and the problem will be solved.

Sounds like a bunch of Chicago’s street rats have migrated to Milwaukee but, we all know that Milwaukee raises their own street rats.

Arm yourselves.

cure is

1. have parents who teach moral principles to kids
2. learn at an early age about guns and gun safety
3. respect God and his teachings(10 Commandments)

Residents need to arm themselves and start shooting the thugs and "ganstras" dead. When the bad guys start assuming room temperature in large numbers, they will get the message and pick on targets elsewhere. Remember the Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid by Jesse James?

The James-Younger Gang tried to rob two banks in this Minnesota town on the first day of hunting season. They were stalled by a brave teller who bluffed them saying the vault was on a time lock (he was killed). A citizen saw the robbery in progress and sounded the alarm. A gunfight ensued with the occupants of Northfield shooting the robbers to pieces. Two citizens of the town and two robbers were killed. The gang escaped with its wounded.

The citizens of the town formed a posse and actively hunted the bandits down. The James brothers split from the gang (Frank James was badly wounded) and escaped. The Younger brothers were captured, tried, and sent to prison. That's the kind of citizen involvement that scares criminals into doing their deeds in other places.
