“This concern is probably not at the heart of the individual gun control debate at the moment as the right to bear arms against a tyrannical dictatorship is a different question as to whether Christians need to own guns now in a stable democratic environment.”
No more needs saying. This is no longer a “stable democratic environment.” It’s not stable on any level.
My first thought as well - sell your cloak and buy one.
Gun ownership advice from a “British Theologian?”
Might as well ask a “Neutered Pacifist.”
For the Christian, the question isn’t the right to own or use a gun. The question is on which side your conscience is on when and if you use it.
After 1945 some were returned, some were melted and many wound up at the bottom of the English Channel.
The Brits had a "stable government" but the environment was not stable, due to a lack of firearms.
I’m going to a gun show this weekend and I’ve been to them before. The only problems I’m aware of happened in the parking lot. Most recently, an idiot shot his father-in-law while playing with his new ‘toy’.
You can’t stop stupid.
But, I still don’t see why Christianity has anything to do with gun ownership. Maybe that’s just my own ignorance.
David slew Goliath, the champion of the evil Philistines.
Should David have owned a slingshot?

Catholics are told that they have a duty to do so: “legitimate defence can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life, the common good of the family or of the State” - Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2265
“Then he launches into a completely apples and oranges comparison with Canada, not even citing similar numbers.”
The very, very, Negro population in Canada is why.
His opinion doesn’t matter. We have a natural right to bear arms, and we refuse to give it up.
"Democracy" - a fancy word for "mob rule".
Somehow that's a reason not to have a means to protect oneself?
Don’t forget swimming pools.
If you own a gun and a swimming pool, your child is more likely to die in the pool than to be shot with the gun.
When democrats campaign to ban swimming pools “for the sake of the children” then I would be willing to entertain their thoughts on guns. (I’ll still reject them, but at least they will have greater logical consistency.)
Even if we did live in a stable democracy, there is nothing that guarantees stability. It takes very little to upset “stability.” Ferguson and Baltimore come to mind as recent examples.
“Hitler’s government, at the beginning, was considered a stable democratic environment.
Then they banned guns.
Then they killed millions of people.”
Thank you for saying it, mountn man you are 100% correct!
Exactly!
He’s never lived next door to an invasion of self-righteous illegal aliens.
Apparently, the Apostle Peter had a sword.
No, only criminals should own guns.
