Fox News To Limit First Republican Presidential Debate To Top Contenders
Daily Caller ^ | 05/22/2015 | Alex Griswold

In a new press release, Fox News announced that the first Republican presidential debate will feature only candidates who average in the top 10 in the most recent polls, in a field where well over a dozen candidates are expected to run. (RELATED: Who Gets In The Primary Debates? A Serious Question For Republicans)

Fox News will host the first Republican presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio on August 6, in conjunction with the Ohio Republican Party and Facebook. One of the requirements for debate participants is that they “must place in the top 10 of an average of the five most recent national polls, as recognized by FOX News leading up to August 4th.”

Six Republicans have already announced their candidacy for president (Carly Fiorina, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, and Mike Huckabee). Four other candidates (Lindsey Graham, Rick Perry, Scott Walker, and George Pataki) plan to make announcements one way or the other in the near future, and six more have taken formal steps toward running for president (Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Bobby Jindal, John Kasich, Donald Trump, and Scott Walker).

The end result is that as many as six candidates could be excluded from the first debate, assuming none drop out, there are no ties, and no dark horses emerge.

I like Jindal, not as the nominee per se, but a contender who should be there.

Would you have 10-hour debates—or 50 debates?

Well, if you have 16 candidates, it’d be 8+4+2+1=15 debates. They could be done in different states.

Yes. And is given enough time to show his brilliance in explaining conservative principles and patriotism.

It seems to me that Cruz is hardly mentioned on FOX, I think I will donate to his cause at once.
FOX needs to change it’s stance to be more inclusive and “Fair”.

It depends upon who’s running the polls.

It seems to me the way to run this is to have identical debate questions put to all the candidates independently, film the answers, and then run the resulting 10-15 minutes of film per person on successive nights, maybe two hours’ worth at a time, with no candidate having seen any other candidate’s answers before giving their own. Then after everyone has seen all the shows, do it again, so that each candidate can pick something to rebut.

I love the debate bracket. Let the two debate according to rules and very little input from the moderator. The bracket can even be held in the same debate. Take three or four hours, with breaks, and when there are 4-6 candidates, have each winner debate each other, and finish the whole bracket in 4 hrs.

Why not postpone debates until after the field is naturally whittled down. Problem is most of these S.O.Bs. are not actually running for POTUS; they are running to fill campaign coffers and pay folks in their respective inner circles. Fox is unwittingly providing free advertising to fill the coffers of candidates who can only hope for God's hand to push them into the White House.

Do it like Survivor...Once a month host a debate and allow members of the GOP, who are willing to pay $50 the right to vote someone off the stage.

As it happens, the Iowa Straw Poll and the RedState Gathering in Atlanta are immediately after the first debate. Having the candidates in Atlanta rather than Iowa may help the Iowa Straw Poll mean something.

Whose polls???

You got it all wrong man...It has to do with how much FauxNews gets greased by the war chests of those campaigns raising the best money...

I say it should be extremely painful for the viewing audience to see every single candidate that has declared themselves and the paperwork filed to be able to debate...However long and hard that may be...

It should not be the choice of the network to decide who is presentable, or not presentable...

Damn their ratings...

Fair and Balanced my arse...

Anyone who lives and breaths by just this one semi-conservative news network needs a vacation, and a few drinks with umbrellas on them...

You know...Bobby sure has run Louisiana pretty well during his tenure...

He may not be making a big splash in the pool of campaign donations and media attention, but does his record as a chief executive of a fairly successful state not mean anything to anyone, for any consideration at the least???

Should he NOT be allowed to make his case based upon FauxNews criteria???

Should read:

“Faux News To Restrict First Republican Presidential Showcase To Top Republican Campaign
Fund Recipients”

Fixed it...;-)

I agree. The first debate might be the first chance many voters have a chance to hear someone not regularly covered in the media. IMHO, the poll numbers before the first debate have more to do with name recognition than anything else.

It might make for a longer debate and the pre and post commentaries will stretch it further. I do not doubt revenue considerations come into play. While this might be a FOX News decision, I cannot help but wonder how much, if any, input the RNC had. The fewer candidates on the main stage, the less chance there is of of a strong conservative knocking a GOP-e candidate put of the running.

Those not included will not be considered serious candidates by the public. After the first debate they will be ignored by the media. We should have at least one chance to hear what they all have to say.
