SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS TO REPLACE FLAGS AT UNION SPRINGS

Gary Carlyle, Commander of the Alabama Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, announced today that at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 23rd, the SCV will replace the memorial flags which were recently removed from a Confederate cemetery in Union Springs, Alabama by an individual in that town.

In a statement, Carlyle said that he wished to thank Mayor Saint T. Thomas, Jr. and the City Council of Union Springs for working together with the Sons of Confederate Veterans on the restoration project.

"The Mayor and the Council have been very understanding and co-operative with us," said Carlyle. "He has been very helpful in making this happen."

Ben Jones, Chief of Heritage Operations for the 30,000 member Sons of Confederate Veterans, an international organization of men who are directly descended from those who fought for the Confederacy, praised the Mayor for "taking a clear stance for healing and reconciliation."

"The removal of these flags from the graves of our ancestors was a terribly wrong-headed, provocative and divisive action," said Jones. "No amount of political sanctimony can excuse it. Our membership asks that this ceremony on Saturday will be given the respect and reverence it deserves by all. We are grateful for the leadership of Mayor Thomas during this time, and we are hopeful that the event will take place in an atmosphere of reflection and genuine understanding. "

I thought the flags were traditionally placed by the Daughters of the Confederacy?

Hmmmmm.....the mayor at first backed the black lawyer who removed the flags, claiming that the SCV was an "outside organization" and that their flags had been "illegally placed" at the cemetery

It's a wonder how some daylight tends to change PC minds quick.

Wow, what a crock! I've volunteered to do clean-up of a local veteran's civil-war era cemetery and I'm not affiliated with any group. I think you're right about the daylight.

“The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified the best qualities of America. The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South’s decision to fight the Second American Revolution. The tenacity with which Confederate soldiers fought underscored their belief in the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. These attributes are the underpinning of our democratic society and represent the foundation on which this nation was built.

Today, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is preserving the history and legacy of these heroes so that future generations can understand the motives that animated the Southern Cause.”

You’re kidding right? They fought so they could own human beings like cattle. Heroes? K.

My Confederate ancestor couldn’t give a crap about slavery. He fought to defend his family and neighbors from the Northern aggressors. Unfortunately, he wasn’t successful.

Very few confederate soldiers owned slaves. Of course, facts don’t get in the way of your opinions.

It was not the “second” revolution either. The first revolution was to over throw a tyrannical government. The Civil War was to resign from a tyrannical government and go their separate ways. This country would be much better off today had the confederacy been allowed to leave the union. From the loss of that war state’s rights have been slowly taken away.

Seeing as how the south dominated the government, were they trying to resign from themselves?

I’ll take a guess here: you went to public school and you took that line from your lib teacher and didn’t have the braincell to analyze the root cause of the CW.

Were these the Johnny Reb battle flags or the tricolor official CSA flags?

You fit so much ignorance in so few words.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The War of Northern Aggression was started because the South was tired of supporting the Federal Government who was getting 90 per cent of it’s budget from federal excise taxes on southern exports. Slavery was only brought up after the conscription riots in the north so to give them the moral high ground. Why did it take so long to announce the emancipation proclamation. And why were only the slaves in the south freed?

Can you say if you view George Washington as a hero?

I don't think so.

i believe that as well. What was preserved is now a stinking hulk of oppression: irs, regulation, land and property confiscation, globul warming, snail darter water confiscation, etc.
