When I first heard this story, my thought was that something happened to the child, and the mother lost her mind. It seems like some kind of denial behavior.

Sounds like it.
Although we don't like it we expect our parents, siblings and spouse to die. We "pre-deal" with it.
But we don't expect our children to die. It is not the natural order of things. So if it happens our minds can snap. We have no defenses in place to deal with it.
