The biggest improvement is that Microsoft under Nadella admitted that the Modern tiled interface in Windows 8 and 8.1 was a failure. Note that on desktop and "conventional" laptop computers, Windows 10 will now default to the older style Desktop interface so familiar to Windows 7 and earlier users, and integrates the Modern tiled interface in a much more usable fashion. Indeed, I would not be surprised there is a huge surge of demand for Windows 10 starting this fall.

Free upgrades to Windows 10 for XP and 7 users (for one year) was also a good move.
